Add-ons are not updating when Firefox is restarted

I just found my USB drive with PortableApps on it and decided I needed to update Portable Firefox. I also decided to update all the add-ons and add a couple of new ones.

Thanks to the FAQ, I downloaded the latest version (3.0.10) and installed it using the PortableApps menu. The program runs fine, and when I searched for updates to the add-ons it downloaded them and ran through the usual installation steps. One didn't update because of a file error, but I'll get that later. I also added Tabs Mix Plux and Xmarks.

Now I've restarted Firefox Portable several times, but all the add-ons are showing the message, "This add-on will be updated when Firefox is restarted."

I don't know what I should try next.

Is it really restarting?

Are you sure Firefox is closing? After closing it, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), and check that neither Firefox.exe nor FirefoxPortable.exe is in there.
(OT: What would be correct grammar for that last sentence?)

The grammar should be...

After closing it, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), and check that neither Firefox.exe nor FirefoxPortable.exe is in there.

Your grammar is quite correct but it would sounb better if you said "After closing it, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), and ensure that neither Firefox.exe nor FirefoxPortable.exe is running."

I tried all of the above. I

I tried all of the above. I finally went to the Mozillazine Knowledge Base. It turns out the question has been asked many times and answered a couple of times, although with apparently mixed results. What I finally did was go into the FirefoxPortable directory on the USB drive and delete the file extensions.rdf. Then I reinstalled 3.0.10. Of course I lost all the previously installed extensions, but at least not as I reinstall each one it actually is activated when I restart FirefoxPortable.

Biggest problem with this is my home computer. It's an Acer, and I only checked to see that it had enough USB ports. It wasn't until after I got it home for a couple of weeks that I discovered they are USB 1.0 ports! All the other computers I've used the drive on had USB 2.0, which isn't bad, but my home computer is agony to work on. It takes over five minutes to restart Firefox, and downloads are terribly slow because writing to the drive is so slow. Why on earth they would install USB 1.0 in 2007 I can't imagine -- I can't believe it's that much cheaper! They must have been getting rid of some old motherboards. Anyway, it'll be at least another year before I can buy a new computer and this is completely off-topic.

USB 1.0 ports .... my home computer is agony to work on.

Hello,
I thought I'd share a quick comment. I've purchased a PCI USB 2.0 card for a PC in the past and got it on sale at a local store for $10. It had 2 ports and was quick to install. I think $10 for a PCI USB 2.0 card and an hour or two of your time would be worth curing your agony. Perhaps a USB 2.0 hub would be in order as well if you have other USB devices lacking speed.

Thanks, Scoott
