Yadabyte Dictionary 140,000+ Portable Definitions

Hi Portable Appsters

We have just released a new free Portable App called Yadabyte Dictionary. Its ideal for when you need a fast and comprehensive dictionary but dont have access to a web based service.

Features:

  • Comprehensive: More definitions and synonyms than any other available dictionary. These all stem from an awesome 145,000 + definitions.
  • Super Useful: Dictionary definitions, thesaurus and usage all in one application.
  • Incredibly small file size: thanks to our bespoke text compression techniques. With Yadabyte Dictionary we have compressed nearly 24 megabytes of information into a mere 5 megabytes. So there is no excuse not to have it on any thumbdrive.

Yadabyte Dictionary can be downloaded for free, along with any of the other Yadabyte Portables, from:

http://www.yadabyte.com/Yadabyte_Portables.php

Thanks very much,

Mat Ripley

If you want the

If you want the uncommented/untidy source, drop me an email mat at yadabyte.com. Some of these apps time more time to produce public quality source than to write:P

Source Required

Mat,

You must post the source and mention the OSI-approved license it is available under from the same location as the download of the binary in order to self-promote it on PortableApps.com. This is to prevent people making binaries available anc claiming they are open source ... or under a given license... and the not actually providing the source when people ask. (I don't have time to verify that everyone will provide it when asked)

Please make the source available from the same page and specificy the license it is available under.

Thanks,
John

Ok John

Will do. To be honest the main reason we haven’t had it up for all is that some of teh source isn’t as well commented as it could be(We are very busy too!). But, we will get it up:)

best wishes

Great app! A few questions...

This is going to be so useful to me that my mind just boggles...

I am curious as to the source of the definitions because I have just done a few tests that I always do against new e-dictionaries and have found some (admittedly obscure) words missing and some with definitions that are incorrect/unhelpful. An example of the latter would be...

cenotaph
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a monument built to honor soldiers who died in a war

This is incorrect and unhelpful because it is far too detailed. Cenotaph literally means "empty tomb" and applies to any tomb or monument erected for the purposes of honoring someone or someones whose physical remains are interred elsewhere or whose remains are not recovered.

The above definition is far too narrow in scope.

Incidentally, a quick google leads me to think the source of this dictionary might be WordNet (http://wordnet.princeton.edu/) as they have the same definition.

If that is the case should one who finds errors in Yadabyte Dictionary attempt to make corrections through WordNet or through Yadabyte? How often will Yadabyte update the dictionary? Or is this a static release?

Thanks!

Wordnet

Hi Eponymous

Glad you like it:)

Yes is Wordnet Data and we will aim to keep up with Princeton as and when they update.
If you have any suggestions for Yadabyte Dictionary we would be delighted to here them, you seem like a man who knows his lexicography!:)

Incidentally, this isn’t the same dictionary we use for the spell checker in Yadabyte Notes (Also portable).

best wishes

...

I think what you mean is the given definition to is too broad in scope, not too narrow. But I'll let it go as it was probably just a mistake.

Er, no. The WordNet/Yadabyte

Er, no.

The WordNet/Yadabyte definition limits the class of individuals or groups memorialized or honored by a cenotaph to soldiers who died in a war. This is a very narrow focus.

A more correct definition removes that limit. A cenotaph memorializes/honors those who are not physically interred there. They may be interred elsewhere or they may not be interred anywhere (most commonly because the remains are not recovered or are unrecoverable). There is no requirement for military service, nor for participation in a war.
