Firefox portable unbranded

Hi all,

can I (or better: someone) create an "unbranded" Firefox Portable?
e.g. that firefoxportable.exe becomes ABACUS.exe und firefox.exe CONNECT.exe or anything And no file that has *portableapps* included into filename.
In summary there should be a firefox portable, that in invisible for e.g. filescans. that it couldn't be found.

please help me.

thanks a lot!

One but not the other

You can rename FirefoxPortable.exe (or was it PortableFirefox.exe?) to whatever you want, so long as it ain't firefox.exe; that creates problems. However that's a launcher; it goes looking for firefox.exe, so you'd have problems renaming that one.

In the future (I'm loathe to say near, nothing really moves real fast round here) what you want to do will be real simple, since they're replacing the NSIS launchers with a generic, one-size-fits-all deal which is easier to configure, easier for you to rename firefox.exe to whatever and then update an .ini file accordingly. The generic launcher is currently available and perhaps someone who knows it well can whip one up for you (or with a bit of patience and skill you can do it yourself, though it may not be as perfectly portable as the one here) but it's not pre-written or whatever.

I know what you're going through, the computers at work won't allow winamp*.exe to run (Winamp or its shell extenstion, winampa.exe). Which is weird because VLC runs, ZSNES runs, Deus Ex runs (that's a PC game using the first Unreal engine), and so far Winamp is the only thing I've seen that doesn't. And the terminal in question has Windows Media Player on it, and it can play Mp3s, thereby defeating the purpose of blocking Winamp. Unless Winamp has some nasty hidden hacking feature I was never made aware of. I kind of want to get it running, as I've been using it since 2.04, I think (and I'm loyal to the 2.x series, I don't use 5.x at all) but VLC is fine for what I do. But I would be most unhappy if Firefox were blocked.

Ah, but you don't need to

Ah, but you don't need to wait for the newer generic launcher for the ability to change the target EXE, just check out Other\Source\Readme.txt. It details how to change the current target with no recompiling involved (towards the end).

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Instructions

Ok, here we go.

  1. Copy FirefoxPortable.ini from Other\Source to the main dir with FirefoxPortable.exe .
  2. Open FirefoxPortable.ini in Notepad or equivalent, and change the FirefoxExecutable value from firefox.exe to something else, like connect.exe, then save the file and exit.
  3. Rename App\firefox\firefox.exe to the same thing that you wrote in the INI, e.g. connect.exe.
  4. Rename FirefoxPortable.exe to something else, but not the first one. e.g. Abacus.exe.
  5. Don't rename FirefoxPortable.ini! The Firefox Portable launcher still internally looks for FirefoxPortable.ini, not Abacus.ini.
  6. Enjoy Firefox Portable.

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
