Special firefox [run from zip]

Pogram: Firefox (pref. v3.0-3.1)

Manufacturers Website: Here (mozilla)

Instructions:
can someone please make a portable firefox that has the ability to run within a zip file.
i would really appreciate this.

Reason:
the reason for this is that our schools network admin has disabled all but a few executables from running and because i have encountered this problem before i know that executables can still be run from winzip or the windows compressed files utility because they show up as one of its child processes.

Ack:
thanx for anyone that can do this

Sorry Mitchell

This not going to happen for many reasons.

The main one being that we only package versions of Firefox which are approved by Mozilla and I'm pretty sure they won't approve of this.

Another being it just might not work, some things can be run from a zip, many can't.

But welcome to the forums,

Tim

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

Also...

Also you can't run something from within a zip file. No matter what in any zip program it has to extract the exe file in order for it to run.

Perhaps when running "from

Perhaps when running "from winzip" the exe is launched as a child process of an allowed app, which in turn allows it to run... perhaps try browsing to an uncompressed (not zipped) .exe from within winzip and try running it... worth a shot. Or even better, go talk to your network admin and see if he might allow portable applications.

Rename the executable(s)

Why not just rename the executable to something that you are allowed to run? You can rename FirefoxPortable.exe to iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer which would normally be allowed on a Windows system). You can also rename Firefox.exe, located in ../FirefoxPortable/App/Firefox/, to something else (it cannot have the same name as FirefoxPortable.exe). If you do rename Firefox.exe you must also move FirefoxPortable.ini from ../FirefoxPortable/Other/Source/ to ../FirefoxPortable/. You must also edit this file to reflect the name change. More information can be found in Readme.txt located in ../FirefoxPortable/Other/Source/
