hahahahahahahah

From http://www.surfthewebsecretly.com/how_covert_surfer_works_1.html

"Redirects all of your internet activity to a special folder on either your PC or your USB Flash/Thumb Drive!

This prevents your Internet activity from being recorded on your PC."

SPAM, and dumb SPAM at that.

ha ?

COVERT SURFER

they also state...
"Automatically encrypts all of your Internet traffic"
http://www.surfthewebsecretly.com/how_covert_surfer_works_2.html

so doesn't this mean the local files are encrypted ???

they also state....
How Covert Surfer Works
Redirects all of your internet activity to a special folder on either your PC or your USB Flash/Thumb Drive!
* This prevents your Internet activity from being recorded on your PC.
* Since the information is not there, it cannot be discovered
Changes your computer address to a different one!
* Websites do not know Who or Where you are.

this sounds like the local files aren't saved locally ???

well lets see it simple

if all would be true what they claim , this would be then the only browser in the world, but:

if you use just the firefox portable from this site, by default it will not use any special folder to write the activity in, it will simply not use any folder , it has the cache disabled. And yes, you can enable it and it will write to the folder on the stick. In default, it will not record anything. And this is just one of the standard settings of the firefox. So where is the magic?

Changes the address.. well this is the job of a proxy. But this does not mean it can not be traced back. After all, changing address, also a simple router does it..;-)

If you are interested in such things, you could try the TOR-browser (google for it), it comes in portable form and will demonstrate you how such things could work. But with the GUI modules for the TOR operation, there can be lists of actually participating servers viewed, so you will see it needs lot and lot of servers to make the back trace very very complex. The traffic between the servers has to be completely encrypted, the actual keys are never transmitted over the network, a chain of specialized proxy servers is needed for each connection, the server chain is permanently changing and servers are selected from list of many hundreds or thousands every time. Each server will encrypt the traffic and then ext will do the same etc. Rather complex system the TOR worldwide network.
There used to be other similar networks, mixmaster, anon , but I have no idea if they still work on larger scale.

I'd avoid the software even if it were free

I've never met anyone yet who was serious about privacy / security who would tell so little about how their system worked.

There is a total of no information whatsoever on how they actually do what they claim. At best, it sounds like a pay-for version of the TOR network, but such nets are only truly anonymous when they are large.

At worst, it is a copy of Firefox Portable that has been modded to use https through a proxy on their site by default - that would fill their claims.

I respectfully, but strongly disagree.

It is a money making scheme based on software making false claims. Snake oil security is malicious software. I urge you to reconsider keeping the links as they are links to malware. It is malware because the software creators are knowingly marketing software that does not work, and relying upon their word could have disastrous consequenses for the user.

EDIT: Further, it is off-topic, as this is not the request apps section. Also, spam should be deleted simply because it is spam.

To summarize, I believe the post is:

1) self-promotional spam
2) a link to malware
3) off-topic

EDIT: Why do you think this is open source software?

Plus the video link is loaded with lies.

You may find this interesting:

  • What happens if I lose the USB drive I downloaded Covet Surfer to?

We can remotely destroy the drive, once it comes back up on the Internet. You will have to purchase another subscription, as each subscription is registered to the respective USB Thumb Drive.

Because..

Why do you think this is open source software?

Because this thread is still here and this site only champions Open Source apps.

Good of you to find yet another website with the same app name, apparently Covert Surfer isn't a copywrited name either. LOL

The originally posted site is an affiliate.

The links to download or purchase have referral codes. The site I posted is the actual website for the program.

Just because something is spammed here does not make it open source, nor does it mean that it is being championed by PortableApps.

Don't you think it is inappropriate for this forum to have advertising for commercial, closed source, fake security software that allows its creator to remotely shred the user's entire flash drive?

Users wanting to learn more about online anonymity should not be directed to outright lies regarding the topic. The topic is complex enough without having to deal with complete wastes of time like those sites and the videos they create.
