Mydefrag (successor product to jkdefrag)

Mydefrag 4.0 (successor product to jkdefrag 3.36). This has now finished the beta process and has been released by the same developer Jeroen Kessels. Available at http://www.mydefrag.com
Not OpenSource, but free and freely distributable, scripts are modifiable, and the software actively supported by its author.
JKdefrag in my experience has been the best defragger until this product Mydefrag.

shame

It's a shame it went closed source. Unless there's something super-compelling about it, I think we'll continue with the open one. Maybe we can find someone to continue development.

Of course, we could do MyDefrag as well once we start doing freeware.

The develpoer replied to me:
I know that JkDefrag was wrapped as a portable app, but it was not by me. I have no idea how to do it. Do they only include open source software? Then I guess it is not possible to wrap MyDefrag, because it is (freeware but) closed source. Personally I would not have a problem with them wrapping MyDefrag as a portableapp and offering it as a download, provided that the MyDefrag license agreement is met, for example that "a full copy of the original MyDefrag v4 distribution" is included".

Licensing

It's partially a licensing thing as we prefer open source. Plus, we can host open source apps for free via SourceForge.net. And we can tell what they're doing internally since the source is available. Closed source small utilities are less secure since you can't tell what they're doing. In the end, it's a shame when a great open source app like JkDefrag gets closed off.

If there's enough genuine interest, we may package it as one of our freeware apps, we'd just need the developer's permission.

I would really like this too,

I would really like this too, I just used jkDefrag a few days ago and was really disappointed because of all the things it is missing compared to myDefrag. I know it's not open source but I think we should have both anyway.

Tried that

I have used Smart Defrag before and I much prefer MyDefrag. It does a much better job at optimizing your hard drive as well as I like the defragger in it better as well.

Same Defragger

Keep in mind that JkDefrag, MyDefrag and many others use the built-in Windows defragger. They just expose different options to it.

I wish to respectfully

I wish to respectfully disagree; no, they use the windows defragmentation API, not the Windows Defragger. The windows defragger is LOUSY and doesn't do optimization. The free defraggers that do optimization don't do all too well at it either. I have tried quite a few different ones and MyDefrag does the best out of the ones I have tried as far as optimization is concerned.
