No Portableapps Directory - Crazy!

I've just found out from a reply to a post I made to the "Request apps" forumn here that the apps listed on the navigation bar on the left here aren't everything portableapps can offer!!!

ISTM this is both fantastic and at the same time absolutely crazy!

Surely there must be some big directory of portableapps software somewhere?! A mention in a beta forumn doesn't really help at all as most users want software which "just works" - not a test version.

How do we start putting one together?

I'm not talking about yet another forumn - that would be too difficult for people to navigate and clumsy to use - but surely (John Haller? Whoever maintains the WWW site?) we can make a proper directory - not just a few bits a pieces listed so far?

Technically this would be trivial to do - a couple of database tables to hold listing application name, description, URL and icon with a WWW frontend to display it all, and allow people to add stuff to it!

I'd be happy to help implement and code a system, anyone else?

Nope...

In a word, NO!

Like I said test and beta releases are of limited use - the link you gave is just these.

Most users don't want to download test software, which by it's nature is likely to have problems of one sort or another.

That's a bit more like it, but...

That's a bit more like it.

There's not much on the list though, is there?

Presumably this is a list of only the software which is available from the portableapps.com WWW site?

What about 3rd party portableapps.com software? Isn't there supposed to be loads of it about? Isn't there a full directory somewhere?

I thought portableapps.com was a community project, not restricted to just what some ("software moderators"?) add to this WWW site?

If the only way of getting listed here is to be published here, there's obviously going to be delays in publishing new releases - which wouldn't happen if 3rd party WWW sites were linked to? (i.e. no dependance on the portableapps.com WWW site to approve and release 3rd party official releases?)

If you've heard that there

If you've heard that there are loads of third-party apps here, the test releases are the loads. If you want a bunch of portable apps not directly affiliated with this site, head over to www.portablefreeware.com ...

I thought portableapps.com was a community project, not restricted to just what some ("software moderators"?) add to this WWW site?

What were you expecting? This place is not a big host of all portable apps. There are plenty of places to find portable apps. I think you confuse this site with something like the site I linked above.

Disappointing

I had heard that portableapps.com was pretty big, with lots of applications that integrate together with the portableapps.com menu system - but it turns out to be pretty small.

I know there's lots of other sites which do portable software, but I was really excited when I downloaded the suite, as I thought it was something big.

But with so much still in the testing stage, I guess I'll just have to come back in 6 months and see if anything's moved on since then...

Wow!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

http://www.portablefreeware.com/ is massive! - much, much, MUCH bigger than portableapps.com!

It's not all integrated into a single system, but that doesn't matter - they've got quite a few "application launcher" type programs which do exactly the same thing as the portableapps.com menu system!

A big BIG thankyou for that!

Really?

I think with more than 60 Apps here, this site isn't small. Its one of the worlds best pages for portable applications and every App released here is tested thoroughly and thus gives the end user a certain level of security.

There isn't a complete list of all the Apps released in the PortableApps.com format, because there is no one there to keep track of new releases. Everyone can package his/her App in this format because its open source and freely available.

I see your concern about beta / testing releases but lots of people put a lot of time in their test release so they could in fact be considered official. It just takes a bit of time to get it released here with official support, help pages and such.

I think its wrong to want a complete list of all Apps and at the same time want them all to have a certain quality level. With the huge number of Apps, thats a hard thing to do.

I don't know how many more official apps we'll have in 6 months, but there are definitively a lot of things that have moved.

PS: portablefreeware has a lot more Apps but the info about portability the give you isnt always 100% accurate.

Different goals

The purpose of portablefreeware.com is basically to be a directory with useful information. AFAIK, that site has nothing to do with creation or testing of portable apps (though I don't visit there very often, so there's a small chance that has changed).
The purpose of this site to create, test, and maintain open-source (there's some work being done on proprietary freeware, but it's all third-party because John has no host for anything proprietary) portable apps. Because the projects are open-source, there's naturally going to be a community, and some members have contributed their own projects. Of course, they aren't normally able to put in the time and effort that John does, so their projects will move along much more slowly (that's why there's so much still in testing and not officially released). The fact that quality is so important makes it even more so.

Both sites are great assets to the portable app community, but they serve different purposes and one should not expect either to do what the other does well.
