uTorrent pwns it lol

But you can make a launcher for it. Vuze has an open source "core" but the "platform" is proprietary, according to Wikipedia, so you cannot legally redistribute it, unless you have permission from the authors.

What you can do, however - and I'm not up on all the details - is obtain the latest copy of the PortableApps.com Format and Installer (should be on the Applications page?) and set it up to where Vuze itself is not included (as that would be a license violation) but rather, it automatically downloads it, unpacks the installer to the appropriate directory... and then voila, your end-user has a portable version of Vuze.

As for my opinion, I haven't used Vuze since it was called Azureus, and I can't remember what I disliked about it, but since switching to uTorrent I have not looked back. You can search in uTorrent as well, but it calls the default web browser. And it is portable right out of the box, if you set it to use directories relative to its directory. But IE is my default browser, so I don't use that feature. (I have Portable Firefox at home, and don't know how to make it default in Windows.) So I search using Firefox using a search box plugin. That works for me. And that's what makes a well-formed opinion: one's preference based on what works for one.

Good luck on your Vuze launcher/live installer, if you go that route. The powers that be here say that the site will eventually encompass freeware and that these live installers are the next big thing here, so who knows, a year or two from now your launcher might be the one people use...?

for those people that are stuck w/ vista and parental controls however utorrent is useless, as it uses the default, aka blocked / parental controlled browser, is why it fails for me...

as for the thing you described, i failed to even scratch the surface of what i needed to accoplish it and gave up...lol...*EPIC FAIL* so could you give me the proper info to do what you said?? PLEASE???

Sorry to hear that. My computer doesn't tell me what to do; I tell it what to do. This particular terminal doesn't let me access certain websites (only a few I care to) but since its owner pays me, I don't complain. At home however, the second my computer gets out of line, its hard drive gets erased, and Windows reinstalled. Almost all of my apps are portable, from here, so it's a real easy transition.

I know virtually nothing about coding, but with some basic skills, you can use Chris Morgan's generic launcher. Head over to the Beta Testing forum for it. Here's what you do. You install his launcher to a folder, you call it VuzePortable. Inside there, inside the App folder, you rename AppName (a folder) to Vuze. Install Vuze, and copy its program folder to the VuzePortable\App\Vuze folder. Go back two levels to VuzePortable, rename the launcher, and edit the .ini. It's not a walk in the park, but it isn't terribly hard, either, but it can sandbox both files and registry entries to make many apps portable.

Then what you do is, you uninstall Vuze (won't remove the copy in the launcher), make sure every trace of it is gone, and then you get a program called RegShot. Run it, have it save its snapshot. Run Vuze, play around with it. Close it. Run RegShot again, have it compare to the first snapshot, and then post the log here (use pre and /pre tags to contain it in a codebox) and folks will tell you if it's clean or not. If it's not, what makes it "unclean" is what you'll have to sandbox, I believe. Once it's done, you can zip it up (sans the contents of the Vuze folder) and distribute it, I believe, and then you'd instruct the end-user how to get Vuze in it.

It's not easy to make a portable app. It's easier than it was a year ago, thanks in a large part to that generic launcher. But it's still a difficult and time-consuming process. It's rewarding, though, I would imagine. I've never made a portable app... I write articles on wikiHow and edit others, and I try to help here, as I'm a big fan of both projects, and even that little bit is rewarding. But to actually make an app people use daily and appreciate, that's gotta be awesome.

Open mouth, insert foot. OK, I am not trained in reading those, but I can tell you that that is not a clean RegShot.

For starters, you will have to redirect %APPDATA\Roaming to your Data folder somehow. That folder contains your Configuration settings, and while Vuze is running, it may use those folders, but they need to be moved back to the portable environment when the app closes (and the launcher cleans up).

Others will have to assist you with the rest. But it seems like you're off to a start. The .ini for Chris's launcher makes it easy to redirect folders and registry keys.

APPDATA, file extensions

APPDATA=%DATADIR%\settings in the Environment section may work - note that ...\AppData\Roaming is %APPDATA% on Vista, while on XP it's ...\Application Data. First of all try:

[Environment]
APPDATA=%DATADIR%\settings

And that may or may not work. If it doesn't work, then use:

[DirectoriesMove]
settings=%APPDATA%\Azureus

This should work whatever - it'll move it back and forth from Data\settings to the local machine.

The registry stuff is either meaningless junk which you can ignore, or file extension registrations. You must find a way of disabling any automatic file extension registration - normally the way this gets done is creating a set of settings, turning off some "check to see if ___ is associated..." etc. things, and then look at how it saves settings. Some use things which you can handle with a ConfigWrite section, but if it's an XML file, see if you can strip down everything else (other non-portable-related settings) and have it work and copy Data\* to App\DefaultData\* and see how it goes - if there is no data, it will copy that stuff in. I suggest that you take a look at the launcher INI file for my GanttProject Portable; it uses default data and an XML file, and updates things in it too.

The Vuze "platform" can not be redistributed because
it's a website and it isn't GPL'ed (the website)!!
the "platform" has NOTHING to do with the application "Vuze" other than the fact it's displayed in a browser-window inside the "Vuze"-application.
The application "Vuze" is STILL Azureus, released under GPL v2 (or later, your choice) .
Therefore you CAN redistribute any changes you make to the application .

That being said, you can't make Azureus portable without modifying the source-code .
When saving data, Vuze/Azureus uses absolute paths. If the drive-letter assignment has changed you will need to re-load all the torrents .. This can not be fixed with a launcher .

I totally disagree with NathanJ79, uTorrent doesn't pwn anything .

...*confused* you talking to me or the guy helpin me... as you said "vuze uses absolute paths..." and went on to say "i totaly dissagree with you UTORRENT doesnt pwn anything"... so im not sure who your talking to, either way i just want to get vuse to be portable, it should be possible, but that im not certain on...and i have to get this done asap...so like i said im confused on who your talking to, and if your informing me that its not possible then that would just suck...lol...and the whole night would have been a waste of time... but in either case please let me know so that i can deside what to do next. please and thank you... and again thanks for your help ppl.

EDIT: wow right after i posted this i saw you used his username in the post...ROFL...waste of space i guess this is...

EDIT2: man im getting this program made quite fast all things considered, but i would not even come close to finishing without the help you guys are giving me, so keep it up and thanks for all the help, after i get it up and running ill fix it so others can download it...i got everything i could possably need to do that, but none of it has helped me thus far for anything...rofl...

please and thank you...

Absolute paths - easy :-)

Absolute paths can very easily be fixed with launchers. As you're using my launcher, take a look at the DriveLetterUpdate section. It's got just about everything you'll need.

If -vm etc. doesn't work, which I expect it won't, try an Environment variable JAVA_HOME=%JAVADIR%, which probably won't work as well, and then try just running the ordinary Azureus.exe and using Process Explorer to look at what arguments it runs javaw.exe with (right click on the instance of javaw.exe which is a sub-element of Azureus.exe and click on Properties). Then you'll need to set ProgramExecutable to javaw.exe and DefaultCommandLineArguments to the remainder - which will have a -classpath part and various other things.

Also, as mentioned earlier, try the Environment APPDATA method first, and if that doesn't work, uncomment the DirectoriesMove lines.

Post back what you've got. Remember you've still got to take care of the file extension registration.

Commandline Options

Have you seen this? If you've got a PortableApps version of java.exe already going, I'd recommend skipping Azureus.exe and launching directly through the .jar file.

Also, I can't remember where in this thread it appeared, but Azureus does, IIRC, obey the JAVA_HOME system variable.

kinda understand this...

ok i sorta understand this a bit more now that i have reread this today, so i will try this out when i get home to my house.
i still dont fully understand this, so i will post back when i get home and give this a try. your still going to tell me
how it is i go about registering an extension, as i have not the least clue on how to do this. i hope there is a portable
version of the program you told me to use, as i cant install anything now...back to a limited access vista account. so heres
hoping there is a portable version... if not then im in trouble. but could you help me out in making a portable vuze,
now that the portable java, and portable java launcher are made?? as im still a noob in this stuff, and this is my first
app im trying to make... so if i cant get it, if you would, i would be forever in your debt... anyways hope you'll still help...
thanks again for all your help.

please and thank you...

:)

Yeah, I realised it might be confusing ..

One thing to keep in mind is that Azureus ALLREADY uses a launcher,
"Azureus.exe" .. This launcher is created with ej-technologies "exe4j"
( http://www.ej-technologies.com/products/exe4j/features.html where you can also download a free, fully functioning test-version )
.. so, you are in effect creating a launcher for a launcher that launches a .jar Smile

You should use the azureus.exe-launcher to set working-DIR, data-dir etc etc ,
either by creating a new one or by using the "azureus.exe.vmoptions" file that the launcher can read . It's just a text-file, one option pr. line feks :

##Azureus.exe.vmoptions
-Dazureus.config.path=\Azureus.PAF\settings
-Dazureus.install.path=\Azureus.PAF\

It can also search for a java-runtime, either on the host or at specified locations (or both) .. You can also pass parameters to the java-VM, very useful for memory-tweaking . It also hijacks the process-name so you have "azureus" running instead of some unspecified java-instance .
.. and naturally, you can call the created launcher "azureus.paf.exe"

But none of that solves the basic problem of having to change the source-code so azureus stops using absolute paths internally ..

JRE location

The only problem I'm finding with your solution is how to specify the JRE path - they say it can be done, but I can't find the requisite documentation. I would use a separate launcher though to launch it. Could suggest your solution, when tweaked, to them if you wanted...

You can set multiple search locations, 3 I believe it is .
If no JRE is found you can even have the launcher download it,
just like "portable java" does .
