I came across MyPaint a while ago when reading up on the next Blender Open Movie Project named Durian. At that time the windows package was a fair way behind the latest source. Just recently it has been updated to match the latest source.
MyPaint is a fast and easy open-source graphics application for digital painters. It lets you focus on the art instead of the program. You work on your canvas with minimum distractions, bringing up the interface only when you need it.
MyPaint comes with a large brush collection including charcoal and ink to emulate real media, but the highly configurable brush engine allows you to experiment with your own brushes and with not-quite-natural painting.
Here are some screenshots.
I am hoping to look at doing a portable version but it may be a while before I get an opportunity. So if this does appeal to anyone else and they would like to take a crack it then feel free. Otherwise I hope to release something in the near future.
I have just finished a quick test.
So far it appears to be an interesting program.
I firstly made a portable version with JauntePE and there were no registry entries created. I then did reg shots and ran the program without JauntePE and the regshot looks clean - only 4 entries relating to threatfire malware scanner. I also shrunk the install with AppCompactor down to about 14 Mb.
Here is the reg shot:
There is a folder created in userprofile called '.mypaint'. Also there is a file created in userprofile after use called '.recently-used.xbel'.

I remember I stumbled upon this quite a while back as well, it'd surely make a great addition.
Also, thanks for the tip on the next open movie project, I was trying to discover what they had next just a few days ago.
Yeah I thought it would be an interesting addition. Quite a neat app that will be of benefit to me whilst I am doing my Graphic Design course. Currently designing a DVD cover for one of my projects.

I'm not sure if this app is already portable or not... but it would be lovely to see it listed in this site. Bringing visibility to open source projects can make open projects have a boost in their community of users/contributors.
Thanks.

Are you a frequent user of this application? On the face of it, it looks pretty good, I just can't help but make comparisons with Gimp. So how does it compare? It looks like this tool is aimed more at the "natural" artist, that is to say it looks like it tries to create more real-life art techniques/effects than digital effects. However, I'm not really an artist so that's just a layman's impression.
here's another alternative...

Hi Darkbee,
I don't think these 2 programs should be compared because their purposes are very different... however one really cool thing is that both have support to a file format called .ORA (Open Raster) that aims to be kind of an OPEN .PSD (Photoshop Document) replacer format. The more formats exist to INTEGRATE and open source apps interoperate the better! This is pretty ambitious and pretty sweet project. It should be spread. By making a portable version of it I'm sure its community users will significantly increase.
It should be a popular open source application such as Inkscape, Gimp and Blender once its portable installer is done.
