I highly doubt it seeing as

I highly doubt it seeing as it wont work on current processors. the current processors are 64 bit and cannot handle the 16bit programs that 3.1.1 uses. Also 3.1.1 doesnt support USB or SATA or even DVD so modern equipment would not work. Also you would have some problems on the partition size due to 3.1.1 only supporting FAT 16 partitions up to 2GB in size.

Sad...!

Well, thanks for your quick answer...

Wait! what about virtualizing??? maybe with qemu?

/me runs to google... : )

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

Cool idea. you would be able to do it with DOSBox, in theory.

I've seen up to 98 done in DosBox. It's on youtube. I'm quite sure it would beat any other graphical front-end.

Hey! Where'd it go?

I didn't know you could

I didn't know you could search DOSBox's directory like that. Cool, at least it works. I just located an ISO download.

Hey! Where'd it go?

yes service CD

there are many service CD around which will boot into dos. Then they have often protected mode w98 there as an extra app on it, just to give you some kind of GUI for those who are not able any more to use cmd or at least commander.

If you get one of the hiren-CD, you have it also there. It is the protected mode only however, rest would need lot of other drivers etc.

sure you can

sure it works no problem.
Any hardware able to boot into dos from usb will do. all machines will be able to run legacy 16bbit modus by one way or other.

But: to have it portable, well this need boot to dos, as w3x is just a software running under dos and not an operating system.

It will also work in majority of any virtual machines, but I found many problems with it recently. VMware workstation can operate dos well, windows 3.1 will run on it fine, but windows 3.11 will freeze. Virtual box works, but I found big problems that it correctly reads keyboard settings under dos, same for virtual PC of MS.
Virtual box would be best for portable use. Once windows is installed on the dos, all works fine.

So try to get real installation floppies of w3.1 and installation floppies of dos 6.2 and you can install all into virtual box. The dos part moght be difficult, depending on what keyboard you have, it will not follow first the settings of autoexec and config, the keyboard layout will be probably kind of confusing. Chars might work, but difficult to find those where you need alt and altgr keys.

serach net for

HP flash drive boot utility for example.

Produce with it a stick and as boot file give it a dos boot floppy. It will then produce dos bootable usb stick. Then you can test if your computer will like it, that means if it will boot from the stick. If yes, then you can just copy the rest of the dos files on it, if start files properly adjusted, one could probably just copy a working installation onto it.

As a side note...

I've seen Windows 3.11 running on DOSBox on Symbian smart phones. I for one am attempting to get that working with my phone. Biggrin Geek toy! Woo!
