Formal request

I'd like to formally request a launcher for MapleStory. I have searched, and this is the most recent post about it. There are posts from 2007 and 2006, with nothing done in either.

Program: MapleStory
License: Freeware
Description: It's a free MMORPG.
Website: http://maplestory.nexon.net/ (Be warned, it plays a video.)
Copyright/legal page: http://nxcache.nexon.net/nx/global/legal_info/legal.html
Terms: http://nxcache.nexon.net/nx/global/legal_info/terms.html

I remember when this topic first came by. So when my wife told me that a friend at work told her she needed to get on MapleStory, I remembered seeing it up here. Sadly nothing ever came of it. I'd like to install a portable version to my external hard drive so we don't have to reinstall/reconfigure it after a Windows reinstallation. And she can put it on her flash drive and take it to her sister's, I think.

Oh ho... Looks like I have regshot on the external... I'll post my regshot difference log then.

Regshot help?

OK, you guys gotta help me out with RegShot.

First I ran RegShot, had it save the first shot.

Then I installed MapleStory, ran it once (it bumped into the Windows Firewall and refused to play, but I bet next time I run it the Windows Firewall will prompt me to Allow it).

After that, I went back to RegShot, saved the second shot, then did Compare. Notepad opened, I tried to post the contents up here... and it failed. As in this site refused the post. Just went to a blank screen and said "Done". (Site needs a "post rejected" screen BTW.)

Saved the difference file, checked its properties... it's 5.32MB.

How do I get that small bit you guys post when you do regshots? All the settings are left on default, I didn't touch anything. It's doing logs as plain text, scan dir C:\, F:\Temp is the output path. No comment.

Evil app

If it's generating a 5MB thing, there's something really evil about the application, or you're doing something wrong. What does the output look like? You should be able to read the content just fine.

...

I don't have it with me, but it starts out like the ones you guys post with the header and it starts listing registry entries.

Near the middle there's what I guess you call hex data. A bunch of pairs of characters ranging from 00 to FF. Then there's more registry keys and then it lists the files it adds.

The steps I took, that is about right, isn't it?

Correct

That should all be correct.

Take a look at it, use common sense, see what you reckon you can dump out of it which is obviously unrelated to the application in question.

Lots of changes

OK man, I got my wife to email it to me. I figured out all of the RegShot "headers" have the same number of dashes. Here is the summary...

Keys added: 674
Values deleted: 1574
Values added: 1276
Values modified: 610
Files added: 374
Files [attributes?] modified: 44
Folders added: 28
Folders attributes changed: 1
Total changes: 4571

...Oh, I have an idea of what happened. MapleStory had to install Flash, and I'm seeing references to Shockwave in the diff file.

Also, it launched IE, which hadn't run yet, so RegShot caught that too.

I tried to sort it, but there's so much crap and I barely scratched the surface. I'm sure you can imagine what 5.32MB of text is. It's a lot. Even if I did whittle it down, would you really trust I'd gotten all of it? I don't trust it myself.

Still, there are a TON... and I mean a heck of a lot of Registry keys that contain the text "Nexon" or "MapleStory". It is a mess. I am leaning toward "Evil app".

What did I do to my computer by installing this??? See, this is why I use PortableApps programs. They don't muck up the Registry.

Flash? Internet Explorer?

No good.

Edit: now I actually see what MapleStory is. Give up on it completely, it seems like it's just a straight client to the main Maple Story website and so it uses IE and Flash. It just can't be done.

OK

Damn. But I see your point and understand why.

But if it's just a straight client to the website, as you say, why is the download 1.4GB? Took nearly an hour to download, and about 10-15 minutes to install (mostly to extract the .msi file).
