Viability Question [ Nintendo Wii ]

alright, dunno much about makin apps honestly, only that everything has to be localized to the drive in referance to the folder, not a drive number or anything... so, my best bet is to ask-

this is about the Nintendo Wii, so fair warning about the potential stupidity of the question ^.^;;

i know you cannot modify the browser in the wii, and thats not what im asking really, but since the wii home menu now allows an interfacing of sorts to an SD card, should you have one plugged in, would it be possible to create a new browser app which has java etc localized in it? im asking because the main shortcoming of the current browser is the fact not only does opera not have fairly universal compatibility yet, but the one the wii uses is becoming completely redundant due to no java, active x, and no real update expected for it at all...

while this is a request, before that its just asking is it possible, which is why i put it in the general forum instead of the requests forum :X

The PortableApps.com project

The PortableApps.com project is just about making current applications portable under the Windows platform. Web browser development is not done over here but by the Mozilla folks.

If you'd like to use the Firefox browser under the Nintendo Wii, you might have more luck by searching for an X-enabled (GUI) Wii Linux distribution.

An ActiveX is a Internet Explorer subsystem and is not used / available under other web browser since it is a proprietary software.

Just getting in to the Wii

Just getting in to the Wii hacking scene myself, so I just thought I'd shed some light.

1. As was said above, this site is for apps developed for the Windows platform. The apps here won't run on the Wii any more than they will run natively on Linux or Mac (for the sake of the point, ignoring Wine, emphasizing running NATIVELY).

2. What you would want, i.e. a web browser for the Wii, is not a portable solution. There really isn't much use in installing a web browser to your SD card expecting to use it more than one place. I mean, how often do you go over to a friend's house and need to get online using their Wii? Also, you wouldn't be able to do it at all anyway unless their Wii was modded (as yours would have to be in order to even do any of this).

3. Related to #1. The first step to actually getting even close to this would be to somehow compile a web browser for the Wii's architecture. I'm not sure if this is even possible, so there may have to be some tweaking of say a Linux build of the browser with a minimal Linux backend to run it. This hasn't actually been done yet, so don't think you can just go out and download the latest Wii version of Firefox and be up and running. It doesn't even exist yet.

4. If Firefox ends up being the browser of choice, it will be an unofficial build, so it will either not be called Firefox at all or else it will technically be illegal, so be wary of anyone claiming to have made "Firefox for the Wii"

5. I'm guessing you posted here because of the SD card being the medium of installation = thinking PortableApps. Sorry, that discussion is better suited for the Wii hacking community.

Check out wiibrew and wehackwii if you want to find out more.

And if you do, just as a tip, don't just up and ask how can I do it or when will it be done. You can't, and it will be done when it's done ;). That will just get you pegged for a noob. Do your homework and browse their forums, it's been asked before.

Oh, and welcome to PortableApps.com Smile

On a similar note, the Wii

On a similar note, the Wii browser doesn't have Java support for a couple of reasons, the licensing being one of them. The other issue is the Wii would not be able to handle it. I'm not sure why, but it would run horribly slow. I got this from a post in the Opera forums a while back.

Hey! Where'd it go?
