auto update question..

I read the FAQ and it said it was OK to let FF auto update.. I have been getting a message to update to release DOT 04. But isn't that upgrade intended for non-portable versions only and I have to wait for the portable version?

thanks,

no prob

You can update to .04 with no problems. Just make sure that you have some space left where you put your PFF. I strongly suggest making a backup of it prior to updating any version. Once PFF1.5.0.4 comes out, then you can move your profile to the new PFF if you want to ensure the latest version.

"Once PFF 1.5.0.4 comes out..."

Huh? No need for everything to be redone every time there is a minor update. But you are correct, backing up profile is a very good idea. Read more here.

RickW, PFF is FF using a NSIS Launcher. It is explained better here.

RESEARCH can teach a lot... Wink

I only mentioned about when

I only mentioned about when the release comes out if like myself and i am sure other people out there that wants to make sure that everything is up to date and perfect with no bad entrails left over and such. I did not mention that he had to, simply that if he wanted to. but anyways... Rock on!!

.

I am simply saying that with PFF a new launcher/download is not needed for every minor update. (That is what the autoupdate feature is for.) No need to "wait for John", as some people seem to think. The NSIS script takes care of the "bad entrails". I agree, rock on. Blum

Update to 1.5.0.4

I just tried an auto-update to 1.5.0.4 from a clean install of pff 1.5.0.3 and it failed. Has anyone else experienced this ?

Certainly

Yes, I've made a clean install in a local folder (ie: a hard drive) and it's failed. So I guess we should wait till PFF 1.5.0.4 is released in this web site.

I know that my update fails

I know that my update fails the first try then it asks for full download and I let it and it updates just fine for me. Maybe a plugin or another thing preventing it on your machine... Maybe admin privs? Try it again... The update works for most people out there. Just a minority of people it doesn't work for. I personally have 5 themes and 35 extensions plus userchrome mods in mine and I update just fine...

Still not working

My scenario was a clean install on pff 1.5.0.3 on my HD, with admin privs and plenty of disk space. The auto-update fails, then it downloads a new version which converts ff back to the non-portable version.

Could the update servers be serving a locale specific version of the update depending on location ? I am in .au, maybe I'm getting the EN-AU version of the update and pff is EN-US ?

I am having the same issue

The first time the 04 release came up, I went ahead and ran it. Unfortunately it locked up Firefox, and from then out I could not open it any more. I deleted the PFF folder and put a backup copy in. I think the problem is it recognizes the update, but there is no option of where to save the update to when it installs, so it will install to your regular Firefox on your hard drive by default.

Portable apps ROCK!
