Portable GIMP won't load any images besides .xcf

PortableGIMP is unusable for me as it won't open any other file format other than .xcf and I get an "unknow image format" error on .PNGs, .JPGs, etc.

This is a known issue with GIMP (see references below), but I've never experienced it with PortableGIMP until now. I haven't used PortableGIMP since at least last summer so this bug was introduced since then.

I did go check the info in one of the posts which tells you to go check Preferences -> Folders -> Plug-Ins and that was set correctly to the place they were installed to so I'm out of ideas.

Any help getting this sorted is appreciated. I need to make to picture background colors transparent and GIMP is the only tool I have to work with that can do what I want.

Hmmmmm....

Deleting the PortableGIMP directory and a reinstall with the latest version cleared the problem and now the plugins load light years faster. I must have been using some ancient version of GIMP. I thought it was the latest one....

Oh well...disaster averted! Nothing to see here, move along!

same here

I have just experienced the same. Noticed, thta during strat, gimp was apparently trying to load some font plugin or what, waiting long for it without success and this seems to have broken all plugins. Have simply installed same version over it and all works now.
Also on my side, the entries in the folder lists seems to be correct, still gimp can not use it because probably of one broken plugin.

Must be some general problem in gimp itself.

I see you solved the

I see you solved the intermediate problem already; here's a solution to the overall problem: use Photofiltre. It's pretty darn lightweight, but it can do what you want... (I know, I use it all the time)
