Program to big to fit in memory??

Ok.. I know I'm not the smartest brick in the pile some days.. however, I can't figure this one out. I am using the Portable Apps version 1.5.2 installed on an 8gb flash drive. My main machine is a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz w/ 2 Gb of Ram Windows XP Pro Corp machine. When I installed it the first time it was working GREAT.. I love it. I love it so much I purchased a 32Gb Flash Drive so I could make the tools on the drive more complete for my and to have more storage.
Now the weird part, I cannot seem to get it running to save my LIFE.. I am installing using the same download that is working fine on the 8Gb drive, doing a normal install. After it "says" the install is complete I tried to remove and replace the drive.. no start-up .. Ok, oddity right? No big deal.. open the drive and start-up double-clicking on the "startportableapps.exe file .. nothing .. Being a little excitable some days I went the other route .. open the cmd window.. went to the drive .. everything looking good so far .. typed in the startportableapps.exe into the window and I get this error ... "Program to big to fit in memory"
I'm at an impasse .. How can something that at MOST is 32Gb even if it loads the WHOLE drive into memory there is plenty. It still loads fine on the same machine with the 8Gb drive .. can someone PLEASE tell me what I'm missing??
I appreciate any help you can aim at me.

(B.T.W. .. Thank you for a fantastic prog, that, as a manager who has to run between 4 computers every day I treasure VERY much.. just wish it would work right on my new drive.. LOL)

Bad Drive

Sounds like a bad drive. You didn't buy it online from a non-major site or from ebay did you?

Suggestion

Try copying the files you have on your USB drive onto your harddrive, then uncompress the software you originally downloaded to another location on your hard drive, and compare the two.

If there are no differences, there's no problems with your USB drive.

If there are differences, there may be something wrong with the USB drive you bought.

In that case, try this:

  1. delete the software from your USB drive,
  2. copying the version you manually uncompressed onto the USB drive,
  3. remove your USB drive,
  4. plug it back in again,
  5. copy the files back again from your USB drive to your PC
  6. compare them again

If that copy is corrupt, your USB drive may well be a "fake", and corrupts data written to it.

Well, the drive is a Kingston

Well, the drive is a Kingston from Office Depot. And no differences in the files when I check them like you suggested. Only difference is I haven't added in the apps I am currently using on the 8g drive. That's why this is so confusing to me. I even reformatted the drive the last 2 times I installed.
This is really starting to bum me out..:-(

Retail store should be OK

If it's from a retail store, I wouldn't expect there to be any problems with it

How did you compare the files though? Although they may look OK, the data stored inside them may be bad - you need to do a "binary compare" - try checking them all with WinMerge from http://www.winmerge.org/ to be sure (this can compare whole directories!)

Stop

Stop overusing formatting. Bolding an entire comment is absurd. At this point, it would seem like you're just purposely trying to be annoying.

What I'd do

What I'd do is, load the PortableApps.com Platform Installer on your trusty 8GB flash drive, and carry both back to Office Depot. Tell them what is happening, try to run the 32GB flash drive on their machine, and install the Platform from the other drive freshly, and show them that it's still not working.

Then, when you get your refund/store credit, instead buy a 250-320GB portable hard drive. They're just a little bigger, and use a 6" cord to connect to USB, but they get their power from that as well. They cost a bit less than a 32GB flash drive, too. Not sure what you paid, but Newegg has hard drives that size for around $50-$60. Since I paid $35 for a 16GB Corsair Flash Voyager, I can only imagine you paid twice that or better for your 32GB drive, even if it's just a Kingston. At least as much as those hard drives. Though they may be twice as much at Office Depot, all brick-and-mortar stores mark up computer accessories by 200% or more, unless the price is controlled (e.g. digital cameras, iPods).

Got it..

Not sure what it was that caused it .. but .. I finally got it. I drew the files from the operating 8gb into the 32gb. Now it's working... I could sit for the next 20 years and not know what exactly the problem was. But, I do appreciate all ya'lls help. Was starting to think I was losing what little mind I have left.

Thanks again

(God, this prog rocks .. thanks for all ya'll do and for the advice.)

Glad you got it working!

I work with computers all day, and sometimes you just get one of those weird skullbuster problems that eats all your time, and you try every logical solution to no avail and then equally mysteriously, it fixes itself!

Anyway, I don't know if anyone here has said it yet, so..
Welcome to PortableApps.com!

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
