PeerGuardian is no longer being developed, only an unstable beta works with Vista, and Windows 7 blocks it entirely. The unstable beta has a bug that allows hackers to overload it and shut it down, canceling its protection.
PeerBlock is a fork of PG2 based on its source code, and it continues to be updated. Different icon, but the app looks exactly the same. And it works for Vista and Win7, they say.
I've read up on it, and it sounds legit. I mean, you'd be wise not to trust a fork of such a program, it could be sabotaged, right? Well, everything I read, from various sources, gave it glowing reviews. In any case, it's open source, so if it were naughty, this information would come out at some point, and it would be hard to silence it.
PeerBlock also recommends using different block lists. They have the details and reasoning on their site.
One thing they do - rather, their new blocklist provider - that I really like is, they have the IP addresses of sex offenders in a new blocklist. That means if you use that as a blacklist, your chances of accidentally downloading, *ahem* illegal adult material (well not adult but you get the idea) is far reduced. Also, if you have kids, these people can't connect to them on the instant messenger, making it probably the first such program that I've heard of. And they have a ton of other great lists, too. (Don't want to stop using PeerGuardian? The lists should work with either, since PG and PB are essentially the same software, just one's updated.)
I'm glad you mentioned PeerBlock, since I was fed up with PeerGuardian2 crashing every other day (but now I am suspicious--could I have been under attack?).
Which list blocks sex offenders? I have three of the default lists activated (education is off) and have a few of the Bluetack lists enabled as well.
I believe sex offenders should not be allowed to use Tor, and I want to stop them from connecting to my node. Yes I am infringing on the freedoms of someone that has served their time for their crime and is now "rehabilitated."
I dunno right now, I can check when I get home. I can tell you from memory that PeerBlock recommends a new block list provider. iBlocklist sounds familiar but I'm not sure. They have a long list of block lists, a few are paid only, but most are free. Should be easy to spot. But I'm not looking it up at work.
And hey, I'm all for infringing on the rights of people who go out of their way to hurt women, and especially kids. I'm all for a lot worse for them, too.
Oh yeah, PeerGuardian crashing is a result of an attack. Someone out there, I never found out who, has some way of overloading PeerGuardian. Happens more on Vista or that latest beta, 6c I think it was. 6b was a little more secure but did not work on Vista.
Silly as it sounds, the whole Net needs that block list. No quarter for sick ****s who enjoy hurting kids (or watching others hurt kids). Not a lot makes my blood boil, but that's one, if not the one that does. So I'm proud that if I'm downloading, um, a Linux distro that they want, they can't get any of my bandwidth to get it.

You can use that link and the Search feature in the upper right hand corner of every page to find more information
Quick read seems indicate it needs a driver and therefore admin rights
but Welcome to Portableapps.com
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
You mean someone took my advice and is drafting a version of PeerGuardian2 as local proxy, bypassing the need of a driver?
Limits are for people with no imagination.

I checked out I-BlockList and found the list I was looking for.
