I have a PNY 512mb usb dribe, and I want at least 1gb, but they come with the U3 system and I don't want it. Can I get rid of it and use it as if it were a common usb drive like my PNY? [want to avoid installing the U3 on every computer I get to]

U3 has an uninstaller tool, but it doesn't appear to be linked directly from anywhere on their website. In any case, here's the link:
http://www.u3.com/uninstall/
Note that, as that page says, this is irreversible. Once you do it, the U3 stuff will be gone for good, unless you buy a new drive.

Thanks a lot! Irreversible? hehe, They can keep their U3 ^_^ I really don't know what's the point... it's not like I can't use a usb drive in a smart way, or "protected" way...

Frankly, U3 missed the boat. By the time U3 took off, people were already making portable applications that could be run from a standard USB key. The only advantage U3 offers is the ability to automatically open the menu on insertion, and you pay a price for that, too--the drive clutters up the namespace with an additional drive letter.

U3 just splashed into the water and flailed around a bit.
Tune in next week to see whether U3 survives or not.

I think it can be pretty useful, once modified *ahem*. I really don't like the 'U3 standard' they've developed for their apps, what with the extraction to the hard drive (and my managing to corrupt that directory on my main computer...leaving major traces). I'm finding the CD emulation useful in certain situations. Though as a rule, I've kept their programs (and whatever I have to patch in) to a minimum.

Hi ashes, can you elaborate more on how you play around with the CD emulation and how does it come useful, I will like to benefit from it too. Thanks
playing around with it per se, it's just able to get around certain restrictions at the moment to allow access to my key. I'm just using pstart to launch certain access points. It's not a really elegant solution, but it works. What I was actually playing around with was patching things into the launchpad, which I've since stopped because of the way it handles some things. Ah well.

I just wasted 4 hours trying to figure out why my Ativa U3 drive was hanging my laptop. Turns out that I installed InCD so I could make use of the DVD-RAM drive. Well, it seems that InCD and U3 aren't compatable. I took it to another machine where InCD was running and it acted the same. Killing InCD and the U3 works fine.
Before I Uninstall U3, does anyone know of a work around? If I have to decide between U3 an using DVD-RAM, the answer is clear. U3 is gone.
Anyone know of a InCD alternative?
Clair
There's an error in the table of contents of the CDROM partition of U3 drives. InCD tries to analyze it on insertion (since it identifies itself as a CD) and ends up in an infinite loop. The only resolution is to reboot (usually a hard reboot... turn it off and on). Killing U3 and InCD won't bring your system back. Since it's an issue with the table of contents on the drive itself, it may affect other CD writing software as well. I just know about InCD because it bit me in the butt and cost me about 1/2 a day of development time. Sandisk has a public notice about it.

Thanks John,
I just posted to Kate's Blog on the U3 site. I don't expect it to show up or get any action, but I feel better. I guess I will just blow away U3.
With your "Apps - Portable" we don't need U3 anyway.
Keep up the good work.

Comments on a blog aren't really the best avenue. Try contacting U3 support. Even if they don't have a solution yet (and, no, uninstalling InCD isn't a solution in my book), it may light a fire under em to know that this issue is affecting their users.

Right, but I did get a response. I went back and actually found an entry about the problem and an email address. They didn't make it easy. Anyway, I sent an email to info@u3.com
If enough complain, maybe it will get fixed at least for others. Don't think they can do anything for those of us who already have the defective units.

If you'd like to get rid of U3 entirely, here's a link to the uninstaller:
http://www.u3.com/uninstall/
This will remove the U3 CD emulation partition and make your U3 drive act just like a garden-variety USB key.

Here is a response I recieved this morning
Claire,
I am sorry that you have had such a troubling experience with your U3
smart drive. We have discovered conflicts with CD-ROM software as you
have encountered, and there are work around solutions available.
I have asked Esther Kruijver, our VP of Product, to follow-up with you
and ensure you get the support you require to resolve the issue.
Best Regards,
Kate
