[Outdated] Google Chrome Portable 3.0.195.27 Revision 2 (Edit: Dev Build Updated Again)

[Edit: This thread is outdated, please go look for the new one.

https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable/

or

https://portableapps.com/node/21385

are probably what you want.]

To celebrate the inclusion of Google Chrome Portable in the PortableApps.com official apps list… I’ve, um, started working on it again and fixed all reported bugs, including the theming bug.

I've also fixed a more serious bug that exists in the official version released last night. If you are comfortable with using Development Test builds I recommend you upgrade immediately using the Stable download link below, otherwise hopefully we'll get the official version updated soon.

Stable/Beta: http://downloads.mzzt.net/GoogleChromePortable/GoogleChromePortable_3.0....
Dev: http://downloads.mzzt.net/GoogleChromePortable/GoogleChromePortable_4.0....

[Edit: Google just released a new Dev build today which I have updated GCP to use. If you experience frequent crashes, disable any installed extensions. A fix will likely appear in the next Google Chrome Dev release.]

[Edit 2: Made some changes for John. If you downloaded after I made the first edit this new one won't have anything for you, it just fixes a false AV positive.]

[Edit 3: Updated the Dev build again to *.223.11 which fixes a crash bug when using RSS feed extensions.]

Changes:

  • Merged John Haller's changes into my own source.
  • Fixed help links to point to Google Chrome Portable page.
  • Pinned PortableApps.com to the new tab page for new profiles.
  • Removed "don't set as default browser" release note since we use DefaultData now.
  • Chrome occasionally spits out a debug.log in the Chrome-bin folder. This is now cleaned up on close.
  • Fixed bug where RunLocally was forced to true.
  • Fixed bug where RunLocally would not copy some theme images back on close, causing theming problems.

Topic Updated / Please Test

I updated the topic to our standard for Beta stuff.

If a few folks could test and verify, I'll post this today.

Ditch NsExec, Use MoveFiles.nsh

Since we're doing a revision now anyway, let's ditch NsExec. It causes issues with two popular firewalls which mark it as malware. To move files, I'd suggest first deleting the cache and media cache and then using MoveFiles.nsh. We use it in Notepad++ Portable, too. hea wrote it just for our launchers.

MoveFiles wouldn't have

MoveFiles wouldn't have worked since it uses the Rename command in NSIS... Renaming is not the same as moving files, as it only works WITHIN a volume. Since I'm moving files to and from %TEMP% which is on a different drive that won't work.

I used CopyFiles instead. Most of my calls to nsexec were to copy, not move, anyway. For moving files across volumes a move is just a copy and a delete anyway.

So yeah I tested the changed functionality (everything works) and uploaded.

Cool

Cool, thanks Dan. Let's get some people testing this puppy!

btw - launcher versions we keep em separate from the app version, which is why I'd redone it as 1.6.0.0. We'll call this 1.6.1.0 in the actual release.

Moving app folder...

Here's what i've found:

- when i move app folder to another location dowloaded theme is not working, it starts with default one,
- when i set chrome as default browser it does not work (can't open a single link with it) on vista x86 (vista menu start can't locate application - running chrome portable as admin and setting as default only helps with start menu icon error but still application is not starting).

Don't Move

You shouldn't be moving folders. Only the drive letter should changes. It should be installed to X:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable.

You shouldn't set it as default.

Drive Letter

I find that kind of cumbersome for computers where I'd like to sync my flash drive with and run it off of there when possible. Then I either install TrueCrypt for the virtual partition (if I don't have admin privs, I obviously can't do that) or not ever run any apps and install them separately (like that's gonna happen).

Consistency

Just keep it consistent. C:\PortableApps on your own PC (Or D:\ if you use 2 drives if you prefer) and then ?:\PortableApps on your portable device. It's easy.

I can't

As I said, I don't have admin privs. No partitioning. No virtual drives. No writing to root. Sad

subst

Take a look at subst. It's very useful. It maps a drive letter to a directory, and doesn't require admin rights.

So you can store your apps in a location like C:\Documents and Settings\digitxp\My Documents\PortableApps and then just set up a batch file and put it in the startup folder in the start menu, containing subst G: "C:\Documents and Settings\digitxp\My Documents" (or if you like elegance an NSIS script which won't show any window, using nsExec::ExecToLog). Then you'll have G:\PortableApps\EverythingPortable ready for use Smile

Just to add to what John

Just to add to what John said...

Google Chrome Portable should work if you move the GoogleChromePortable folder around while GCP is not running, but if you fool around with the folders inside of it such as App or Data or the folders inside THEM, something is going to break. You should not need to do anything with these (App\readme.txt tells you not to!) The recommended location is <Your Portable Drive>:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable as John said, so that it will integrate with PortableApps.com Platform if you have it installed.

Google Chrome failing to start when Google Chrome Portable is set as the default browser is known and expected behavior. Do not set Google Chrome Portable as the default browser.

If you wish to use Google Chrome as your default browser on your computer, I recommend using the normal, non-Portable version here:

http://www.google.com/chrome/

If you are interested in the "early access" releases (the "Beta" or "Dev" releases), read this for more info and instructions: http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel

I should also mention it is not necessary to run Google Chrome or Google Chrome Portable as administrator. In fact, Google Chrome is specially designed to run with as low security privileges as possible, so I suggest you avoid running it as administrator.

Oh yeah, don't install Google Chrome while Google Chrome Portable is running. That will likely break Google Chrome. Maybe both of them. The installation will start immediately if you use Chrome to visit the download site so use IE or Firefox or whatever else you have.

I'll be testing this for you.

I'll be testing this for you. I'm goig over to the dark side since anytime i try to use firefox it acts really retarded. I'll be checking to see if Chrome acts the same, but in the mean time, you have a tester. Biggrin

I find Firefox works a lot

I find Firefox works a lot better if I clean out the profile. I will usually only keep my bookmarks, sometimes I keep some extensions and extension settings, but if you have bad startup time you should kill everything except bookmarks and build a new profile (AdBlock Plus has/had a nasty bug that increased startup time by 11 seconds with bad settings or something).

Yes, I did just give advice for a problem that caused you to use my launcher, but hey, you can use both browsers! Wink I use Chrome on my desktop but I'm still watching Firefox since I miss all my extensions and 4.0 should bring some serious performance improvements.

I can sync all my passwords to a notebook, then use Chrome while I try to fix Firefox Biggrin

Thanks for the hint. I'd rather use firefox honestly (not that I don't trust you, its BigBrotherGoogle I distrust), but with it so slow, Chrome makes me happier right now.

SpeedyFox!

(Sorry for the intra-forum self-promotion.)
I just finished a wonderfully failing SpeedyFox Portable that when done should be able to defrag the Firefox databases.

Can't install

If you can't install it, it can hardly ruin Firefox...

Chrome_installer.exe not valid

Just tried to install and received this popup:
"The downloaded copy of chrom_installer.exe is not valid and can not be installed." Any suggestions? I have not tried the rev 1 of the install yet, just went straight for this one.

Figured it out

Didn't have a program to handle the 7z. Now that I'm at home it went fine.

PortableApps.com installers

PortableApps.com installers have the built-in ability to handle 7z.

The error is not related to 7z, but to verification of the downloaded chrome_installer.exe (which contains the actual Google Chrome files). The error indicates the download of Google Chrome was corrupt. Possibilities:

1) A problem with your internet connection. Try again. If it happens again, maybe wait a little while. If it is a problem with your ISP or Google's servers they will likely fix it quickly.
2) Your computer is infected with malware that is modifying downloaded files.
3) A misbehaving or misconfigured firewall or router is corrupting or modifying the downloaded file.

At least, those are the only things I can think of. 7z has nothing to do with that error.

Enable Sync

Since this is using the Dev Build, is there a way to add the "--enable-sync" option to Sync google bookmarks? Unless there is a way to do this through the Portable Apps pop-up, but I have had no luck changing those links.

Yeah the problem was twofold:

Yeah the problem was twofold: 1) RunLocally was stuck on and 2) RunLocally was accidentally deleting some theme files every time you closed GCP.

And deleted files don't magically come back on their own. Smile Well unless you're on CSI.

Download and passwords

I recently downloaded and installed 3.0.195.27. I told it to remember several passwords and was able to look at the list of saved passwords to confirm that these were actually saved.

Initially when I went to log back on to various sites, the usernames and passwords were filled in as expected. However, after a few restarts Chrome still completed the usernames but not the passwords. Looking again at the list I can see that they are still there.

Last night I updated to Release 2 Development Test 2 but the situation is unchanged.

Today I tried to update to Revision 2 but when I click on the download link I'm told that the file is not there to download (as others have reported).

I'm thinking Chrome uses the local user account information as part of the cryptographic key (but I'm not sure where I got this idea from so it might not be true) for the password data. If so, then it's probably not possible to make the password filler totally portable without editing the Chrome source.

I think there might be a Chrome extension or two out there to handle passwords and one of them might be an acceptable alternative for you. I doubt they would forget passwords like this (I think at least one uses a master password as the key).

[Edit: A quick Google looks like I am correct. A workaround would require some sort of SQLite plugin for NSIS plus some sort of cryptography plugin for NSIS. Plus your passwords would be stored in plaintext on your usb drive or at best obfuscated and easily decryptable.]

Extensions work fine for me.

Extensions work fine for me in non-Portable. I will test them in Portable, no reason why they shouldn't work, unless you are using an extension meant for a different version.

"Extensions" will appear in the tools menu if extensions are enabled.
