It would be really handy if the rollover tool-tip on the applications in the PortableApps menu would give a brief description of what each program actually does. I installed a bunch of programs and don't remember what all of them do.

Nice idea, but I'd not like it to be like windows where it's on by default and when you use cursor keys it pop's up something.
The good thing about PA.c is is it doesn't suffer from the skill-level complexes that windows does assuming everyone by default is a complete and utter moron.
I think they did it pretty well with the Super Tooltips in Office 2007, because it's not on top of anything really and it helps everybody with figuring out which is which.

Actually there's a good VST Host called Cantible that is based on that application framework, not bad I reckon being a Cubase (nuendo) user and all.
Personally I rather find them annoying. Sometimes i stop moving my mouse in just the right spot and they pop up, blocking whatever I WANTED to read >_

How about, instead, we make use of that empty space in the lower right corner, and have it display helpful information about the app, its version number, and what it does. And no marketing speech either. So for Firefox, it would say "Mozilla Firefox/3.5.4/Web browser" (slashes representing line breaks). We don't need to say it's the best web browser, the only one that easily blocks ads, open source, and we definitely don't need to append "portable" to the name again (that should be obvious).
muswell wasn't being insulting, per se, but he's also incorrect. Windows aims for the lowest common denominator among computer users. So does Mac OS X. Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora do, too, albeit to a lesser extent than Windows. Successful software aims to appeal to the simplest computer users yet proves useful for power users alike. In fact, the current and official incarnation of the PA.c menu appeals more to simple users, without a lot of complex options. The feature-loaded equivalent would be the R34 menu. The official menu isn't there yet, but it still appeals to power users just the same.
Well I'm no power user but I've tried all the other menus, a-suite etc, none of them work the same, eg you have to write a .vbs file just to get it to appear if it's minimized somehow.
That behavior I don't like, as tooltips I can only have them on or off so generally I put up with them or find a better explorer such as what is available here.
Users can have whatever the designer(s) decide is appropriate but if tooltips are coming them I want them implemented in a specialized way, not just a generalized tooltip simply because of what's happening with the mouse or system caret.
muswell, I'm getting the impression you don't like tooltips. If so, you could rally behind my info pane idea. If not, I apologize if I misread you.
I think they should be Windows tooltips, if they're gonna be tooltips at all, just like that, and if you turn tooltips off in the Registry or with TweakUI, the menu won't use them either.
I used to hate tooltips. Always getting in my way. Now I can live with them, and find them invaluable from time to time. They are definitely not exclusively handholding tools for newbies. Perfect example, uTorrent, you point at the systray icon and it'll tell you what it's doing. Beats opening it, if I didn't want to, if I just wanted the quick info. Also, if you have two PortableApps.com Menus open, point at one and the tooltip will tell you the drive letter and volume name. You could click on it, but the tooltip will save you two clicks -- click on, click away.
As such, I used to disable them -- now I don't bother.
