good question... thing is that you need the lame dll not the exe for Audicity. you can easly find it online or borrow the dll from other programs. for example at home i didnt even bother downloading the dll seeing as there is a copy provided with Roxio. Yes Roxio uses LAME. so a simple copy paste made things easy.
It's still available as a zip (just below the EXE installer on the site). I think I'll put together a plugin installer for it.
i'll be sure to look for it.
Also, I always wondered why Lame couldn't be bundeled with Audacity. It is GPL, right?
Also, I found a portable Lame download on softpedia.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/Multimedia/Audio/Windows-...
It's GPL, so why not just PAF it and get audacity/boncenc to use it like portable java?
LAME is illegal in many countries because it includes patented technologies without licensing said patents. MP3 a patent-encumbered format and cannot be used without various licenses.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3#Licensing_and_patent_issues
Wouldn't that mean you couldn't even do the plugin legally?
I'm assuming no, not if you're in a country where it's legal. If you provide the download from a "legal country" and someone from an "illegal country" downloads it, I'm assuming that they are liable not you.
Since LAME can be installed for various programs, why not build a plugin installer that will allow the user to choose which programs to install it for? Maybe multiple programs at once rather than have a different LAME installer for each program.
Audacity, for instance, uses a special compilation, not LAME's dll. The PA.c Installer doesn't currently support using one plugin for multiple apps.
unzip it with 7zip
We can't pull the ZIP directly from the site (it blocks it) so we'll say no-go on this for now and continue to recommend people do it manually.
If it blocks Zip download, how come BoncEnc has a Lame installer?
it should not have it.
Theres a link to a PAF installer right on the page.

i see so it is kept seperate. still it is illegal in some countries to have a LAME installe due to copyright. that program may be illegial in some contries. this is why LAME only provides source code instead of Source and an installer.
If one were to create an online installer that would download the package and install it in the appropriate folder for a program that require sit?
I think it is legal they way we have it now so why change it?
We already have a mp3-plugin-installer for the apps that need/support it just the way the local apps have.
thanks
exactly what I was hoping for, except for the lack of error correction found in EAC, but... that is life, for some reason didn't work well at all in any configuration, bonk works fine, thanks
[oh, nice, I see the cdparanoia mode for bonk!!!]
