win 7 and Portableapps ICON

Well, I updated to Windows 7 without too much fuss.
But, my favorite little Portable Apps ICON does not show up on the Windows 7 Systems.
Has someone figured out how to correct that?

It is such a nice launch pad and easy to show people how to use portable apps, I would really like to get it back.

Thanks,
Chuck

Explain

What do you mean? Nothing has changed for Windows 7, it all works fine.

The Notification Area autohides icons

On my new laptop, by default, W7 will autohide icons in the Notification Area (system tray), unless you explicitly tell it not to. If I choose Show Hidden Icons, and then Customize, I can make it persistent, but I don't know what it writes to the registry for that...

Click the arrow

You can still click the arrow.

No doubt

But if you have to click the arrow, and then click the PA icon every time you need to open it, that gets tired pretty fast.
I also foresee that some public access computers will lock the Notification Area, so you can't do this.

Anyway, as I was looking for info on this on the web, I came across this guideline from Microsoft that explains what they think each area of the taskbar is used for, and they specifically say that the Notification Area is not intended for program access:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511448.aspx

From that site:
Windows XP addressed the scale problem by making the area collapsible and hiding the unused icons. Windows Vista addressed the noise by removing unnecessary, annoying notifications. Windows 7 has gone a step further by focusing the notification on its original purpose of being a notification source. Most icons are hidden by default in Windows 7, but can be promoted to the notification area manually, by the user. To keep users in control of their desktops, there is no way for your program to perform this promotion automatically.

Still no ICON in Win 7 Bar

In Windows 7,

With all these great comments and replies,
I still cannot get the portableapps.com ICON to appear in my task bar.
I cannot get the nice selection menu for Portable apps. to appear.

If you can share how to do that, I would really appreciate it.

I'll try :)

Hi,
My windows 7 is configured in french so I'll try to explain but the translated labels could be slightly different. Please follow these steps :

- left click on the arrow next to the systray icons
- a small windows with icons will appear next to the arrow you clicked.
- don't click icons but click on the "customize" text
- a bigger window should appear, allowing to customize the icons behaviour
- in this list, look for "PortableApps.com Platform".
- you should see "Display notifications only" (or similar)
- in the dropdown list, select "Display icon and notifications" instead.
- close the window by clicking OK.

It should work.

NB: each different exe with trayicon will have an entry in the configuration window. If you want to clean the list and start a brand new config, you can read this : www.howtogeek.com.

Hope it will work.
