Google and their Chrome

Is there a certain reason why I cannot search with Google from Google Chrome? I have to use Ask to search things. Google doesn't work with any of my portable browsers but Firefox. With Chrome and Opera, the browser, after my clicking "Search," says it is "sending request" and sits there forever, or until I click on some link or type in a different web address. I would really like to use Chrome, but cannot without using it's search engine (I guess I'm just picky like that). Would it help if I was to tell you any specifics? I am using the Chrome 4 beta but have used the normal one too, and neither work. Does it search normally for anyone else here? I would really like to use my Chrome to its full potential...

Proxy

Please check your proxy settings. That's the most likely source of trouble.

Proxy?

I know there are browser proxy settings, but I don't think that's what you're talking about here... well, maybe... I'm on a different computer and it works both with Chrome and with Opera. So is it something to do with the computer? Or do I have to set the browser's proxy settings not to accept the computer's settings? How would I go about that?

Hello?

So. What proxy settings do I edit, how do I edit them, and what do I edit them to do?

I have no issues

I have no problems using Google search engine from within Google Chrome. I simply type my search terms in the URL box and it brings back the results.

Maybe you need to "Manage" your "Default Search"? When I edit "Google" I get the following string: {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

Computer settings

Yes, but my browser here works with google on other computers. it doesn't work on this one, which is the main computer I use. What are your settings for proxies with your chrome, and is it portable?

RE: Computer settings

I'm not using Chrome Portable but I'd be happy to test it. My proxy settings are the default for LAN which is "automatically detect my settings".

Let me clarify your setup:
You're using Google Chrome portable?
You cannot perform a Google search in Google Chrome portable on one specific machine?
You CAN perform a Google search in Google Chrome Portable on all other machines?
You CAN perform a Google search in other browsers on that one specific machine?

I was gonna say that it might be a Hosts file issue but that wouldn't make sense if all of the above is true.

Maybe you have a previous installed version of Google Chrome on that computer and it's settings are conflicting with the portable version? You'll have to check for a C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome directory (or some similar directory depending on your Windows configuration/installation).

All of the above are true, except for...

That I can search in all other browsers. I can't. The only one I can search in is Firefox, and it has its own special option called "Do not use proxy."

Works for me

I just downloaded Google Chrome Portable v3.0.195.33 and was able to do a Google search by typing into the address bar, and by visiting Google.com directly and typing into the text box at that site.

So maybe there's some malware or something messing with your machine.

I think...

I think what it is is the internet blocker we have installed on the computer, but I have no idea why it would block google...

I also just found that I can search "shopping" and "news" and "maps" but nothing else....

I also found that if I go to Firefox and load a page, and copy its address into chrome, it brings it up... I think its something to do with the blocker setting up automatic options for google (safesearch on) and chrome not taking those automatic options....

And now, I've fixed it (at least, to my liking). What I had to do is I searched a search in Firefox (searched "thisnthat"), and pasted that as the url for my own custom search in Chrome. I found "thisnthat" and replaced it with %s. What it was, I think, was that the internet blocker on here forces all searches to Google to be safesearch and strict. Chrome would never accept this change and so would try to load a normal Google page even though it was blocked. Now that I think of it, is it possible to make it accept these changes? Because it still can't search Google. I just have to enter what I want to search in the navigation bar. I also can't go to the next pages either. So, is there a way to make Chrome let internet blockers mess around?

Out of ideas

I think everyone is out of ideas. Use a different default search/browser/operating system. That's about all I got left. Sorry.

Maybe this'll help?

Chrome uses the proxy settings that Internet Explorer uses. If you have an internet blocker set up on the computer (or any other proxy, like Privoxy or Proxomitron), Chrome will automatically use that.
You can, if you want, try and start Chrome with a switch to disable the proxy, and see if that helps anything.
(open up the properties for your shortcut, and in the Target: box, add in
--proxy-server=
after your chrome.exe target location....
So, in the "Target:" line, mine shows up as:

"C:\Program Files\chromium\Chrome Portable.exe" --proxy-server=

You can see if that helps. If firefox can search Google normally, and it's not set up to use the proxy or the internet blocker, then it should hopefully work.

Meh

OK, scratch that.
Just tried, and it appears to still show up with my proxy enabled...
I also changed the shortcut to

"C:\Program Files\chromium\Chrome Portable.exe" --no-proxy-server=

and that also did not disable the proxy as set up in Internet Options.

As I was looking for an easy way to bypass the global proxy in Chrome, I read up that Google set up the proxy as it is, and is not inclined to change that.
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=266

I am reading through that thread now to see if there are any other options that may be of use here...

Doh!

OK, I see what I did.
I was starting the portable "launcher" with the command switch, which couldn't use it. I was able to start Chrome by itself with the switch "--no-proxy-server=" and it did bypass my global proxy.

If you have the portable version installed, then you'll probably have to open up the directory with the source code, edit the AutoHotKey file, and convert that new .ahk file to .exe, which may be difficult. But, I can confirm it will bypass a global proxy. Biggrin

Not sure if the portable launcher can pass command line switches to the actual program...
(For the record, I am using an older Chromium Portable build that still uses the nightly Chromium builds, but I believe it should work with other Chrome/Chromium portable versions).

Try GoogleChromePortable.ini;

Try GoogleChromePortable.ini; there should be an AdditionalParameters option. Set that to "--no-proxy-server=" (no quotes) and you should be OK...
