portable firefox is god awful. Used in various internet cafes, it's tortuously slow – that's when it's not "not responding". If you're mentally challenged and take 5min for each mouse-click then this is for you.

Slow Drive

The simple answer is you're probably running it on a slow drive. If it's a no-name brand drive, it's using cheap components. Even some of the major brands use low-end components in their cheaper drives.

You can either buy a better-performing drive or disable some features to improve speed:
https://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable#performance

Try copying it locally and running it. You'll find it's just as fast as regular Firefox. Which means the issue is entirely with the speed of the device you are using to run it on.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

The program...

... is not the problem. I would take a look at the computers on which it is used first, before bashing the application. Also, take a look at the quality of internet connection, and the possible restrictions the internet cafe might have placed on the computer. Personally, I've never had a problem with Firefox, in either speed or response, and I'm pretty sure I'm not "challenged."

Possibly

I think it's a defect in the network at Layer 8.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

there can be many reasons for the problem

like the cafe's maybe using only usb 1.1 (still) or like
as mentioned above, it maybe a cheap pen drive.

u can try optimizing with "speedyfox" to improve
startup times.

Cheap drive

Those of you who said it's the computer, not likely, TC said "various cafes" though it is entirely possible they all use USB 1.1 ports...

Sounds to me like the problem is the flash drive. If you want 16GB or less, get a Corsair flash drive. Flash Voyager is good (what I use), Flash Voyager GT is reportedly better. If you want more than 16GB, for your money you want a portable hard drive. A 6" USB cable (typically) both provides data and power, and they usually come with a cute pouch. They're not as durable as flash drives, but for $50-$60 you're looking at 250-320GB on Newegg.com. YMMV on other sites.

Cheap flash drives are only worth using as superfloppies. Portable applications require more power than the cheap flash drives offer, so yes, performance will take a hit. Quite a big one at that. You can't blame the software. Besides, there are more of the software's users want it to do more at a (potential) cost of speed than there are users who want it to run fast at a (definite) cost of features. There are web browsers out there that gun for speed, but Firefox is not one of them.
