I have upgraded my Thunderbird 2.0.23 to version 3.0 and it "lost" my gmail connection and my lightening extension (for dates). Do I have to totally reconfigure version 3.0 or is this a bug or an incompatibility of version 3.0?

As mentioned on the Thunderbird Portable homepage, there is currently no released version of Lightning that is compatible with Thunderbird 3.0. You can use a nightly build of Lightning, but this is NOT recommended for anything but testing. It is recommended you stay with TBP 2.0 until Lightning 1.0 Beta 1 comes out with TB3 support within the next couple weeks.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Actually the only reason I upgraded to TB3 was that it came up when I checked for upgrades....I had been reading about TB 3 and I figured that if it came up as the upgrade that it was now a recommended upgrade....I will be more careful of this in the future. Thank you for your response.

You aren't the only one. TB3 was slated to have calendar support, or at least Lightning installed by default upon release. I used the same setup you did, and wound up installing Lightning and Provider for Google Calendar, both nightlies so I had my support back. I believe Mozilla truly dropped the ball on this one.
As for your issue, John is dead on. The nightly extensions are intended only for testing and you should wait until the beta is released.
