moving messages from Thunderbird on my hard drive to my portable

I've decided to run my email program from my Thunderbird portable on my thumb drive only. How can I move all my files and messages from my Thunderbird on my hard drive to my Thunderbird portable. Can't drag and dump, because I can't open both at one time. Can anyone help me on this one?

Not sure what you mean by messages and files but if you sync;

Documents and Settings\"Your Name"\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\lca90svs.default

with

PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile

you will have all your emails etc. on your thumb drive

You could use Mozbackup

It will backup your entire profile, emails as well as extensions, addressbooks, etc. Then restore the backup into your portable profile.
I've used it multiple times to do exactly what you're looking to do,,,

[link fixed by mod Chris, you've got to either do <a href="http://...">link text</a> or just http://... which will be linkified; don't do <a>http://...</a> or else it won't work.]

sounds like what i need....

I've downloaded it, but not sure what to do now. I'm kind of illiterate when it comes to these things. I thought perhaps it would automatically download into my portable apps, but I'm obviously missing some step somewhere......

It's a simple backup/restore app...

Using Mozbackup, backup the TB profile that includes the emails/settings you want to "migrate", then use the app to restore from the "archive" the backup creates to write that info to the portable install. You can choose which parts of the profile to backup and to restore.
It's all "wizard" based, and you just need to follow the prompts. Help/info is available on the Mozbackup homepage...

one more question....

Does this actually 'migrate' emails/settings from TB profile on my harddrive directly to my TB portable on my flashdrive? I've done the backup restore per directions and it the folders, etc., don't show up on my TB portable, even tho the stuff is transferred to my TB portable. The files end up in G:\ThunderbirdPortable\App\DefaultData\profile\Mail\Mail\.... folder. Is there one more step to get them to come up when I open up TB portable?

Wrong place?

Seems to me that you've taken this too deep.

G:\ThunderbirdPortable\App\DefaultData\profile\Mail\Mail\.... should be
G:\ThunderbirdPortable\App\DefaultData\profile\Mail\....

Copy everything in \Mail\Mail up to \Mail and then try it. If it works, then kill off the stuff in \Mail\Mail.
