Portable Chrome writes to drive too much.

When I use Chrome I notice that the activity indicator on my thumb drive constantly flashes. This does not happen om other portable browsers I use. Chrome puts the cache in the computers temp folder and deletes it on close so it's not that causing the activity. What is Chrome doing that makes it access the the thumb drive so much? It's going to prematurely ware out the drive and its slows down browsing.

I do not know if it still

I do not know if it still helps you, but I can say that this isue is likely caused by Chrome itself and not the portable implementation. So this is nothing we could change as the launcher written by PA.c actually does only something at startup and shutdown and not while you're using the browser.

So you could maybe consider asking Google, but I do not think they'll tell you what Chrome is doing exactly...

Phishing filter

It's updating the phishing filter. After a while the activity should die down after it downloads the whole database. If not, consider turning off the phishing filter and that should speed things up (warning: do this at your own risk).

Yeah it downloads the

Yeah it downloads the phishing filter and the dictionary.

If you still have problems you can try setting RunLocally to true in the INI file if you don't mind trading longer startup and shutdown time for snappier in-browser time.

Signature automatically removed for being too awesome.

better than Firefox

Hadn't really notices Chrome writing a huge amount. It seems to be better than Firefox in this respect. To me anyway. Firefox slows down all the time because if writing to the drive.

Move the cache directory to other drive may help

1> Make a RAMDISK if possible. (I make a RAMDISK R:, you can you C: if you don't have one)
2> copy the GoogleChromePortable\other\Source\GoogleChromePortable.ini to GoogleChromePortable\
3>In the GoogleChromePortable.ini file, change this line:
[GoogleChromePortable]
AdditionalParameters=--disk-cache-dir="R:\TEMP"
4> Restart Chrome
