Thanks for your friendly advice. I WAS searching for 'Gannt-Charts' which does not yield any usable result.
Is there any searchable index of the apps alone so it would be possible to find GanntProject via the above mentioned search (and thus without molesting you)?
You could try the Tests page and look around there. These are all the programs that have not been officially released and are still being tested, so they may contain bugs. In my experience, they're pretty reliable with a few exceptions.
Sadly it seems OpenProj has been purchased by a commercial developer, Serena. As a result OpenProj is now more a conduit for developing projects offline that can be imported into Serena's commercial online offering. To lend weight to this idea is the fact that there hasn't been any updates to OpenProj since 2008
Read the latest new item from the OpenProg feed (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sfnews/forums/forum/1065004) and decide for yourself if it sounds like Serena are interested in developing OpenProj. My thought is the purchase of OpenProj is an intelligent ploy to bolster Serena's own product and migrate a pre-existing community to their product. Lastly it enables Serena to benefit from the ongoing efforts of developers and users who contribute code or bug reports to OpenProj as the improvements are then integrated into Serena's product.
Pretty much the same thing happened with Open Workbench which was very popular as a MS Project alternative then was purchased by a commercial developer. Now there haven't been any updates since 2006. Yet suggestions and bug reports that have been contributed by the community have been integrated into the purchasers product whilst Open Workbench remains outdated.
Therefore I recommend GanttProject Portable. Already available here on PortableApps.com and I have successfully used it for some projects. Not as feature rich as some others but definitely still in development.
If you really want OpenProj though you could always offer a bounty for someone to pick up development and fork from the last GPL'd release
Also there is Gnome Planner which is open source. Last release was in April 2009. Believe it's still under development but not positive.
Unfortunately I can't help you with that. Knowing how difficult Microsoft make importing their formats into other applications I have made an effort to never use Microsoft Project as I wouldn't want to purchase copies for home, college and work.
Try posting in the Gantt Project Forums on Sourceforge as the people users there will have a lot more experience with the application.
AtTask and AceProject can do the job for you. It can do scheduling management through gantt charts. AceProject is a web-based project management suite of applications that provides the framework for better planning.
AtTask, on the other hand, helps hundreds to get work done by helping improve workflow and productivity. Features such as an interactive Gantt chart, calendar views and project group lists are designed to minimize downtime and make data management easy.
I'll be choosing AtTask from the two if I were you but you can still compare them from this list of project management software alternatives. You can check its features and see if it can help you better manage your team and projects,
Still, OpenProj is one of the best desktop applications alternative to MS Project. dotProject, on the other hand is the best web-based application alternative to MS Project.
We use another alternative called Latitude. It's desktop project management software package that can export MS Project files to it's application so it's easy to migrate. It has CRM features, can manage documents and files, track timesheets. Job costs can be invoiced through its simple cash accounting system. User's timesheets can be exported to accounting software for payrolls.
dotProject looks ok but couldn't simply get to actually using anything. Even the demo was down (as of 2011072 19:29 AM AEST). Not sure but guess you have to host the web app yourself.
Latitude is a commercial offering.
Again repeat previous recommendations:
Gantter for web based and Gantt Project for the desktop.
Please search before posting - it's been requested a number of times.
GanttProject Portable handles OpenProj files.
I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.

Thanks a lot for your help and the insight whats going on about Project Management Software.
Maybe you also can help me how it is possible to import old MS-Project98 files into GanntProject.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards
