As an avast! user also, I think I remember seeing this both here and on the avast! forums.
avast! Is designed to be a resident scanner and not an on demand scanner.
I think the way this is achieved is the fact that it uses low level kernel drivers that will cause problems for portablilty...
Add to that the fact that (my opinion) security programs should always be things that are installed on the pc as originally intended.
I also think that if it was made portable it could cause complications in their commercial use clause and possibly end up not being free...

That way you can independently verify that it hasn't been maliciously modified.
As for Avast!, I have no faith in it as I've seen at least four badly infected computer without a peep from Avast!. I've been using Avira, but that uses a lot of resources and I suspect that their WebGuard purposely blocks legitimate sites hosting software that they deem illegitimate. Nod32 has come out publicly in support of heavy internet monitoring and censorship. I'm starting to think that we pay far too much for their software of dubious value.
