Since avast home edition 5 is one of the best and most popular free anti virus and anti spy ware around. I think there should be a potable version of it so you can take it any where you want and won't fear of getting your computer infected.

since the standard free version you install on your PC is running services for the on access scanning and such thing would have to be removed for portable version.
The authors did produce a version for u3, this is a complete rebuild , containing the on demand scanner only, the other parts are not included since they can not be made portable. So you can use the clam as well.

I would be curious to know how one determines that an anti-virus is "one of the best." I have a hard time answering that question for people, and I've read quite a bit on the subject. The rakings haven't been of much help to me.
Gizmo's Freeware (techsupportalert.com) lists it at #6 in the 2009 Product of the Year, User's Choice article.
Clearly, a lot of people think it's one of the best.
