Portable apps on Notebook running Windows CE 5.0

Hi!

I've got a mini notebook on its way to me and it runs Windoes CE 5.0. Apparently a lot of notebooks are running this, although I've never heard of it!

Will the portable apps on this site work on Win CE? It comes with really basic apps like Wordpad, and I would like to be able to run some decent programs on it but are they compatible?

Also, I've heard that Win CE comes with an old version on IE and doesn't have any flash support, is there a flash player with the Firefox portable app?

If anyone could tell me if they work, if they are using them on a notebook with Win CE that would be great! I havent got a clue about these kind of things.

Cheers
Jo

Jo, unfortunately, Windows CE

Jo, unfortunately, Windows CE isn't compatible with other Microsoft product like WinXP, Vista, or Win7. It is extremely unlikely that any software published for 'Windows' will work. You will need to use special versions that are intended for WinCE5; you may want to return the machine when it arrives if that doesn't conform to your expectations.
BTW, I have never heard of a WinCE 'notebook'; who makes it and what model is it?

Hi!

That's not good :o(! I can't really see myself being happy using 'wordpad' for what work I need to do on it for as long as I own it! Perhaps I will send it back. Was hoping I could use portable apps because there's so little storage space on notebooks (well this one anyway!).

Well, every single notebook I've seen (in my price range) has said it runs either win CE 5.0 or 6.0. I bought mine on Ebay, they're everywhere! There's cheap Hong Kong generic notebooks all running CE on there. Why would they put it on a 'laptop' if its incompatible with good things! I don't know!

thanks for the reply!
Jo.

Well, you can still hold it

Well, you can still hold it on your lap; I'd guess that would make an Etch-a-Sketch a 'laptop'.
I figure it is an example of 'buyer beware'. You may be better off paying slightly more for a branded 'real Win' machine like an Asus, Acer, or the like to get software compatibility. Even there, be careful about whether it says WinXP, Win7 or some version of Linux (I am a Asus Linux user and have chosen to live with the compatibility issues for the past two years. My other home machines are also Linux; my wife is a Mac user).
Good luck!
Alan

Thanks, I've been well and

Thanks, I've been well and truly scammed through my own lack of knowledge about OS's!!!

All these laptops saying they have 'windows' when they really mean WinCE and then people like me who know nothing about anything buy them thinking they can install a different OS later on or use windows programs on it just like any other 'windows' OS etc etc are completely stuck!

Its awful, none of the sellers on sites like Ebay highlight the limitations of WinCE! It's a stupid thing to put on there, and I shall be very careful in finding another notebook!

Cost

You'll find that genuine Windows carries a significant cost to the manufacturer, so the extra cost is passed down the line until it gets into the hands of the consumer. On the flip side of that coin, machines that don't run genuine Windows end up costing less. Buyers looking for low price machines will (as you've found) see this first hand.

windows ce

If you look around you will be able to find programs that you can use. Just don't think laptop or speed. More then likely the netbook you are getting or have gotten runs an arm processor. Don't expect programs that you would get for standard windows. It's simular to using a PDA.

you can start at:

Maybe not...

Compare what you paid with what you get. See if they will work with you. The fact that it's on eBay is what is most concerning.

I would be very, very interested in finding dealers of Hong Kong computer equipment. If they are anything other than eBay, I would like to know what you have found.

Netbook with CE

Hello,
Germany is the actual aim of tiny netbooks working with wince.
Several warehouse-chains and online electronic-dealers offer
the 'Allfine PC703 Mini Notebook'. It is a light-weight (650 g)
with a 7" Display.
Aditional to wince there are several applications mounted for
texts, excel, youtube, internet, photos etc.
Unfortunately I recogniced, that it must be ce 4.0 - I will hardly get
some stuff for it.
The special-offer price for it is 111,- € at www.edeka.de or www.reichelt.de.
The manufacturer's URL is www.efirstview.com in China.
Greetings from Palatina.

Snoop

Snoop http://www.smartphonemag.com/cms/forums/handheld-pcs/nec and you might find some good info as well.

Wince usually but not always comes with Pocket Word, Excel etc. and the files convert nicely.

There is another Word type program that is better at http://www.softmaker.com/english/ they have an office program as well.

There are many ce programs around, depends on what processor it has. There are several types also depending on the age of the unit.

restore system

if it is w CE operating system, I bet there is a some sort of protected storage where you can restore the whole system at once. Similar to recovery partition or what ever it is called. In CE systems, this is often even a solid state drive separate from the actual one you are allowed to write to it. Probably you will need to read the manual carefully and find out if there is a reset button or some other method to reset the system to factory default.

I recommend that the mods remove that link.

There is a forum on that site, you know. Why not ask there?

In fact, this thread is loaded down with links to retailers, brand names and marketing terms. I don't think that sizes, prices and where to buy or download have any relevance to portable applications.

Edit: Edeka is a grocery store, by the way.

With wince most of the

With wince most of the devices flash the system to memory and you can't delete it. However??. There is often a soft reset - the button and a hard reset, often the power button plus the reset button for a few seconds - the book should tell you.

If that is no luck you might go to the manufacturer site and see if they have a download program to flash the system fresh - beware it as well as the hard reset will probably wipe any data you have added.

There is a ton of cd software around, they used it in all the business small units for years. What has been said is fairly accurate but you might see if it will fit your needs. I used one for several years for word processing etc.

win CE problems

You can go to a website and redownload that system. WinCE 6.0 for those little china books.
Alot of people upload Android to them, since they don't run very well with this old system on them.
If you want to do a system restore go to:
netbook.poodwaddle.com
there are several different downloads there. This site it based on the arm system. you will need a SD card for the drive. Just follow the directions on that site.
It worked for me.
Hope this helps.
