I have just started using Portable Apps.com and would like to find out what other people think of the program? :):-)

Convenience

When you say "program" do you mean the entire concept? or a specific program from the PortableApps website?

I like that everything is done for me, I just download, install and I have all my favorite applications ready to go, anytime and from anywhere I want (if installed to a Flash drive).

Plus I love that updating is easy, just install right over the top of the old version and I'm good to go.

It's all about convenience.

If we talking about the platform itself...

...then according to the tremendous amount of posts and/or questions, it seems that a lot of PortableApps user would be happy with:

- categories (folders in the menu)
- auto update functionality (upon startup, the platform should check for any updates)
- some sort of encryption capability

Personally, I would be happy with (among the ones listed above):

- hotkey functionality
- ability of handling application profiles
- a possibility to completely separate the data from the application (you are able to redirect the data directory in some apps, but most of them unable to run from a read-only partition)

Convenient (still)

See my answers above.

It's convenient! It's a one stop shop, I don't have to visit twelve different sites to download and update my daily applications. I simply come here, find out what's new and download as necessary.

I've been a long time user of portable applications in general (not necessarily from this site), but having them all packaged in a standard format and in one central location just makes life easier.

Things I really love about PortableApps

Man, there are a lot of them.

* The ability to keep my settings as I move from PC to PC (a big deal for me, since I routinely work with two and sometimes three different computers)

* The ability to run my apps from (some) public terminals, instead of being stuck using the provided apps (some really-locked-down terminals only let you run a very small, pre-installed list of apps, and nothing from a flash drive or CD)

* The ability to reimage my computer without losing all my apps & settings

* The ability to keep - and run - multiple copies/versions of the same app (especially useful with Firefox)

* The honesty and openness of the developers, the apps, and the whole process - conspicuously unlike certain "other" sites I could mention

* The fact that everything on here is free - the trend, especially in recent years, seems to be for quality software to get insanely expensive

* The fact that you can always get help when you need it, sometimes even from John T. Haller (the owner of PortableApps.com) himself

What I like

1. All PortableApps are free with no blatant advertisements or restrictions
2. The programs are very easy to use, so I can reccomend it to my friends without any trouble
3. The programs take up a very small portion of my flashdrive, leaving room for files
4. If I just want to use an app one time, and not install it, I just stop by this site
5. I don't ever have to worry about not being able to open certain files
6. Every PC I go to feels a little bit more like home
7. No traces are left behind on the host PC
8. Responce to problems posted on the forums is quick and provides useful information
9. I can add other apps to the PortableApps menu, even if they are not in PAF format
10. Everything is flexible, allowing me to copy programs to other drives, and install to any folder
11. It just works. Instead of working to get the apps to work, they help me get to work!
