As long as there's no picture open in Gimp, there's a rat constantly peeping at me over the edge of the window. Is there any way to get rid of this rodent?

That's not a rodent, it's Wilber the Gimp mascot, and he's a dog! At least I hope he is!
Don't know how you get rid of it... maybe have a 1px image that you keep open at all times, so you don't have to keep the blank window open. I couldn't see anything obvious in the preferences or themes to change, but I didn't look very hard.
