Just wondering if it is possible to copy my Firefox Portable settings for add-ons search plugins and such to my desktop version of Firefox. this way they would both look the same. Hard to remember what add ons I have installed into the Portable vs the Hard drive versions. Looks to me like if i copt the following from Portable FF to FF I should be ok?
PreserveDirectory1=App\Firefox\plugins
PreserveDirectory2=App\Firefox\searchplugins
PreserveDirectory3=App\Firefox\components
The reason I chose these files (without the PreservedDirectory obviously) is because when FF Portable updates those files are not removed which is allowing you to keep the same data on your new Portable FF install?
Hope this question makes sense.
What you want to do is actually pretty easy, for the most part.
Install Firefox, if you haven't done so already. Once that's done, quit Firefox if it's running, right-click the shortcut, doesn't matter which one, go to Properties, and add "-profilemanager" without the quotes to the line that ends in firefox.exe. Run that shortcut and the profile manager will start up.
Make a new profile, call it something like Portable Copy or your name or whatever. Note where the profile is being saved to; alternately change it to a more convenient location. Start Firefox under that profile, then quit Firefox again.
Browse to your new profile's location, and delete everything. Now copy everything from FirefoxPortable\Data\Profile to the newly emptied folder. Run the shortcut again, choose the profile... and voila! You should be running your Portable Firefox's profile locally.
...Of course, you could just copy the entire FirefoxPortable folder to your hard drive and use Portable Firefox locally. That works too.
Thanks for info it appears that in XP I needed to actuall hit start>run> firefox.exe -profilemanager
Then following your directions it worked like a charm.
Thanks again!

P.S. and now using Toucan Portable I can even keep them sync'd!

With regards to the shortcut, you may have done something wrong or I may have said it wrong. It is very possible to get the shortcut to start Firefox with the profile manager, but this is trivial and unnecessary if you only want one profile.
For reference, I looked at an XP shortcut, and under "Target" under the "Shortcut" tab, it should read "C:\Program Files\Mozilla\Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager -- just like that, what's in bold. I think I forgot to mention the quotes. And I may have the URI wrong, it's been ages since I've installed Firefox. 2.0.something, I think. I've actually been using Portable Firefox at home for... a while now. Anyway, disregard all this if you'll never use the profile manager again.
Toucan will keep the files synced, but that might consume more time than you need to commit. Mozilla has an extension called Weave which will sync Firefox profiles. It won't copy/paste every file, but it keeps bookmarks and history synced. Not sure about other stuff. Might be worth looking into. You can get it by going to Add-ons in the Tools menu in Firefox, or at least read up on it. And then installing is just a click away.
