Portable apps are not intended to get around network rules.

Portable apps are designed to be portable, not secret. While they don't leave registry entries or files in the user folders, there may still be traces in the "Most Recently Used" areas of the operating system.
Also, they are not designed to prevent a system administrator from detecting them while they are being used.
If you are not allowed to access certain sites at work, then Portable Apps won't protect you from being caught, even if you find that it helps you to get around the network restrictions.
Even worse, what may happen is that if you are caught, your system admin may work to block all Portable Apps, even those being used for legitimate purposes.
So you really should follow your work's rules. If you need to use Youtube to do your job, why not contact your network admin and let him know that it is necessary?

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

No Flash at all?

That is strange.

Your administrator comes only once a month? That is also strange.

If your Internet goes through that server, proxy server or firewall, it might record every web page your visit. If your administrator is clever, and you posted this message from your office, he/she will know that you are scared of being caught.

Solanus is right; you can still get caught. Try to learn more about the system in your office. Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen and if you can live with that. Good luck!

A little clarifiacation on system security.

I'm the head of security of my own networks. And the previous posts are correct. Any activity is logged into the server and administration activity logs. For example,if I was the administrator, all i would have to do is look up activity logs and see what you were doing and how you were using company resources. From there i could simply block usb ports from working. It would be very difficult to conceal your activities if the administrator is paying attention. You must have a full understanding of the system structure and technical expertise to circumvent security. Portable apps is not designed to do that so if you are worried about something then just play by the rules and have a nice day. Or simply ask for permission. All they can do is say no. what's more important to you? downloading stuff or keeping your job? In this economy, elsewhere isn't hiring.

system security...

I work for a sub department for a state government, we aren't able to create policy on networking we just have to follow the guidelines handed down to us. So we have to do monthly scans of our logs to see if anyone is using certain programs. We're not allowed to use Skype or bittorrent at work so when we do our scans those are two things we have to specifically look for. Then we send out emails to the users that have used them in the past month explaining the states policy and requesting them to remove them as well as a warning that if it keeps happening we'll have to do a formal write up (so lame).

Our statewide internet policy is horribly restrictive and we actually had to get a cable modem in our office with a couple of lap tops hooked up to it just to have access to some of the web meeting software our users access for training and online collaboration. It's a giant PITA, but if a network is set up to monitor and log activity it's a trivial matter to scan for "contraband" applications being used.
