Firefox 3.6.3 Portable and Hiren's Mini Windows XP

If I boot with Mini Windows XP on Hiren's BootCD 10.1 I can't download files. Browsing is no problems. In the Downloads window (Ctrl+J) I get an Canceled-message. The same thing if I try to save an picture. But if I use an old version of Firefox (1.something) that already is installed on the HDD (of course still using Hiren's Mini Windows XP) everything works great. How come?

I've to boot with Hiren's Mini Windows XP because of HDD boot failure.

Sorry for my bad English Smile

hiren

well as a user of this sometimes valuable software collection, you will know, that many of the apps on that are not properly configured and many functions they might have they will not have when run from the hiren CD or any boot CD you copy them on.
I simply assume, that in this case, the firefox was not properly configured to run from read only media.

I will look into the latest hiren (10.4) I have somewhere and see what is done there.

It is often not done just with copy-paste some apps from all over the world into one iso file and think it will all work perfect.

USB stick – not read only

Thx for the answer, but Firefox Portable isn't stored/burned on a the Hiren's BootCD - it's on my USB stick (so it's not read only). Therefor I can't see any reason it doesn't work Sad

Check config

Take a look at Tools / Options / General / Save files to

If the path specified does not exist, you might not get any error message and it will just not download anything at all.

Agreed

I agree, but it does not.

I found this out when I moved the entire directory to a hard drive and the path changed. It wouldn't download anything anymore. No action at all. No indications of problems at all. It seemed like it just got dumb.

As I was troubleshooting the issue in about:config I figured it out.

Try it yourself. Create a directory, use the tools/options to point there, save, delete the directory, and then try to download something.

Download option set to Ask

Hi,

I've tried "everything" I can find out, but it still don't work ;-(

The most curious thing is that an very old version of Firefox that's was installed on the HDD works like a charm - but not the new one stored on my USB Stick.

how did you install

the ff onto the hiren flash?

Is it done withe the 'customize' and inside the hiren or just separate in some user area?
Did you just copy it to the stick or did you actually unpack it on it and run it first time from there? Can you reinstall it over the existing one?

Firefox on USB Stick

When I installed Firefox on the stick I used the install option in PortableApps Platform.

I've tested and run the program from the USB Stick on an other computer with WXP installed without any problems and configuration changes. Even downloading and saving pictures.

To ME it's obvious that the problems somehow appears only when running it from Windows Mini XP on the Hiren's BootCD 10.1.

about:config

Still, go to about:config and type in download.

See what you have listed.
