Are they portable? I think they might need admin rights to be registered which would be a major show-stopper.

No shell extensions are portable at the moment. The only way to remove them is to crash explorer.exe (and all the associated issues with that) otherwise it locks a file open on the removable drive.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
