Does a portable app currently exist for faxing files (such as a .odt from OO Writer) through an internal or external dial-up modem? Performed a search and didn't come up with anything obvious.

I've never really found a portable one, nevermind open source PortableApps one. I used to use the software that came with my modem (I can't quite recall, something like "BVRP Phone Tools").
These days, in the rare instances when I need to send faxes, I usually convert the document to a PDF and use online services (either free or for a nominal fee depending on my needs).
Most if not all fax programs install themselves as a printer driver amongst other things, so portability will not be one of their strong points.
It wasn't always like that. I have a 16bit Win3.1 fax program (QuickFaxII from Smith Micro) that almost works usefully. Being old enough, it makes no registry entries. But it is also young enough to cope with the "non-standard" COM ports produced by current controllerless modems. When installed, it puts a printer onto that system. But when moved off to other systems on a USB disk, it works OK provided you can feed it text or tif files. Alas, I have never seen a freeware program with those abilities.
Now what I need is a portable pdf (from OpenOffice) to tif converter.
Of course my test bed is Win98, YMMV.
