OOWriter takes prolonged time to start

Hi folks,

I have Chinese (Traditional) download on;

https://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable/localization

and installed on a USB stick. Installation went through without problem and complaint. On testing it OOWriter took prolonged time to start. I tested it on Vista and WinXP. However it starts very quick on Ubuntu 10.04 running;

$ wine /path/to/OpenOfficePortableWriter.exe

Please advise is there any way to improve the speed on starting the app. TIA

B.R.

Virus Scanner

Do you have a virus scanner running on the Windows OS's? It's possible that the virus scanner is scanning the executable and thus slowing down the application startup time. This happens to me with VideoLAN, as it is another large application.

Hi Darkee, No, even without

Hi Darkee,

No, even without virus protection.

Windows, XP and Vista, are running on Sun VirtualBox solely for testing software. They are NOT for production. I have OpenOfficePortable installed on Windows here. Writer starts swiftly, NOT waiting for >10 minutes as installed on USB stick. JRE is up-to-date. I installed JRE on Windows and rechecked it before testing the OpenOfficePortable on USB stick.

One thing amazing me is OpenOfficePortable on USB stick starts swiftly on Ubuntu Linux.

Have you tried changing the Memory preferences?

I found these online, and they do seem to speed things up.
Go to Tools>Options and expand OpenOffice.org and select Memory. Use these settings:
* Number of Steps: 30
* Use for Open Office: 128
* Memory per Object: 20
* Number of Objects: 20
Also, you can disable the Use Java Runtime Environment.
Let me know if this helps.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Hi solanus,

Thanks for your advice.

Made changes as per advice, JRE disabled.

Problem still remains taking prolonged to start Writers and Calc. Even making changes on Options I have to wait for prolonged time.
