Portable Win XP on a flashdisk

Hi guys

i found this while trawelling the net 1 day + I am sure it will make some1 happy.
Theres a guy called LocoCobra that has a portable version of MS VPC for download-it requires the user to finish it - but the instructions are clear + easy to follow.

link : http://portable.lococobra.com/
check out his other projects 2 -interresting stuff...

Copy his MS-VPC folder then get a proper copy of MSVPC installer
Simply install MS-VPC 2004/2007 onto ur PC - then copy some files to his MS-VPCfolder + un-install again. Then put it on a flashdisk + test on another PC (its that simple...)

On some PC's u may get an error :just install MSXML4 (for MSVPC 2004) + MSXML 6 (for MSVPC 2007)

So its not perfect...(still requires an installation of sorts...),although most XP PC's already have these services installed (auto updates) - then it will just work.
But its still a good idea to get a copy of MSXML4qfe / MSXML6qfe incase it complains on a givven PC.

I have had no problems with it yet - it works perfectly.
obviously u will need to actually create a VPC by installing XP(other than it taking long..its pretty painless) using MS-VPC.

This works easier than BartPE (just add your favorite apps as u would on a normall XP PC),but it is slower (slow on a flash-disk ...not so bad from an External Usb
hard-Drive) and it takes up more space - But : u can take any operating system with u and run it anywhere

I dont want 2 upset all the BartPE users out there + and certainly dont intend 4 this thread 2 become a debate (which is better??-keep it to yourself...)just give it a bash + c 4 yourself. If u prefer BartPE - stick with it.

Each 1 (MSVPC + BartPE) has its own uses and both are relevant...

Hope this helps some1..
Cheers

MOA

Another option is Sanbarrow's MOA, its a portable virtual machine environment based on VMWare.

Well

You don't have to install XP, you could install a more stable OS like windows 2kpro or even win98se or Linux though most newer Linux Distro's don't work very well if at all, Win98 Win2k and almost any version of windows work in virtual pc 2007 that includes vista win7 2k3 nt4 early versions are not easy to setup but they work too like win3x and nt3x. it probably would be faster if you setup a VPC that is from a early version of windows then XP, plus 2kpro is very stable. I recommend 2kpro as it should run faster from a usb pin and xp was built on the same code.

still thanks for sharing I love virtual machines, best regards.

cheers

Thanx 4 that - but i didnt really like 2k.(it prolly will run quik tho...)

I have had some success with using NliteOS to slim down an xp sp2
to run on my 4 gig flashdisk and its pretty frugal :

if u check its performance in its task-mangr
the Vxp only uses about 48 mB (AV puts it up 2 a 100mb) and very little cpu while vXP is idling ,obviously i cut a lot of stuff out with NliteOS , like most hardware drivers (cant put a scsi card ina flashdisk, after all) etc.and it only takes up 1.5 gig with all my work-related apps on it.

currently the only real problem is its slow - because im still using usb2 stick
cant wait to try it out on 1 of those new SATA flashdisks (should fly)

anyways...have a good 1.

Thanks

but I installed a 98se VM then tried it on a PC that didn't have VPC installed, it worked but I couldn't connect to the network services, the computer has wireless internet I have VPC setup on my computer with wireless networking and it emulates a LAN connection so all my virtual machines connect automatically with out setting up anything. I installed that MSXML6 on the test PC but that wasn't the problem I think you have to have Microsoft Virtual Server installed too. That is what I have on my computer other wise I don't remember how I had set it up on my PC I think with out the virtual server I had to install the wireless modem inside each virtual machine to connect to the internet. You may be better off running XP so you have auto DHCP 98 doesn't have it and I don't remember if 2k does or not. I am using a 8gig pin and even 98 ran kind of slow of course I only gave it 128mb of memory for the Virtual Machine XP should have at least 512mb or more Ram allocated to it but 128mb is about all 98 ever really could use I think. A Sata Pin sounds like the way to go though mine is a usb2. Best Regards.

I just happened to remember something from a long time ago about running Windows 95 in Ram it's not easily set up but I think it is possible, If you could somehow figure out how to setup 98, 2k, or XP to run from ram, it would probably be much faster running from a pin drive, Check http://www.jankie.net/soedesh/15.htm for some idea's about windows running from ram.

Well looks like some one did the work for us already http://www.ixibo.com/2009/02/increase-computer-speed-by-running-windows-... I would try it in a Virtual Machine install of XP first before messing with my Actual hard drive install of XP on my host computer.

Mojopak

another interesting app which also gives u ur desktop where-ever is MOJOPAC
its pretty impressive...it comes with something like 100 "free" uses (everytime u plug it in + run mojopak),though normal browsing of ur flash doesnt reduce the number and then u gotta buy an extension licence (easy 2 install, easy 2 use..also quite slow...)

but more and more people are getting into this sort of thing..
microsoft r also soon releasing something along those lines called starkey
and another 1 i couldnt test was moka5 (needed a serial 2 install...)
and theres prolly more...

in the near future companies wont have 2 give employees laptops they'll just get a flashdisk with a "portable desktop" which they can plug in anywhere (so called kiosk pc's) and do their work.

exciting stuff.(though i'm gonna miss my laptop...)

No Longer

Mojopac is no longer being updated. The stable release is XP 32-bit only (it won't work on Vista or Windows 7). The beta worked on Vista 32-bit as well (but not Windows 7). None work on Windows 7 nor any 64-bit OS.

From the rumors I have heard, Microsoft's U3 replacement was canceled last year. U3 itself is no longer being developed and they stopped accepting applications last year.
