When I open a torrent file in Firefox and am asked what to use to open the file, uTorrentPortable.exe seems to work if uTorrent is not currently running, whereas \App\utorrent\utorrent.exe seems to work if it is running, but neither works in both situations. Am I doing something wrong here?

Are you using the current uTorrent Portable release? As in, not just letting uTorrent update itself, but also installing our new release with the new launcher? I thought this bug was fixed with it.

John & Gringoloco, thank you both for the replies - you're right that I'm using an older version, I stupidly hadn't thought to try updating! Glad that this has been fixed.
uTorrentPortable.exe is the one to associate with.
Did you get the latest update of uTorrentPortable? Some of the earlier versions didn't support this properly !
