Connecting to servers unnecessarily

Hi,

When I click on different folders in the space of a few seconds I get this message...

"Unable to connect to your IMAP server. You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server. If so, use the Advanced IMAP Server Settings dialog to reduce the number of cached connections."

I'm not trying to connect with the server - just seeing what's in different folders. It seems to be connecting unnecessarily?

I've changed the number referred in the message box to one for each account. I don't get why clicking to different folders makes the connection anyway?

Cheers,

Tony

Server Folders

Whenever you click on a folder, it's connecting to the server. Because the folders are on the server. That's what IMAP is. This usually crops up on shared email servers where the host has severely limited the number of incoming connections permitted. Setting the max connections lower in TB (as you have) will usually get around the issue.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Ah - thanks John! Previously

Ah - thanks John!

Previously I've always used POP, until 2 days ago when I updated and had to set up my accounts again (they went missing!). I lost an entire afternoon on this... Now I've re-installed Thunderbird again, from scratch, and am trying to set up all of my accounts as POP again, and having similar problems to before...

If an account creation doesn't work (sometimes the process hangs at the point where it says it's checking the password) and I've had to cancel, or I've deleted an account and tried to recreate it from scratch, then when I try to do so I get the message "Incoming server already exists". (Even when the left panel is completely empty.) I've found I can get around this by shutting down and deleting files in profile/data/Mail that have the name of the server in them, and then restarting, but it's a bit of a pig.

Cheers,
Tony

Problems getting mail on pop account

PS

I'm still having trouble setting up a POP account. The closest I can get is where everything looks right in the server settings, but when I try to "Get emails" the program hangs. There are only a few messages on the server (64), none of which have attachments, so this should be a quick transfer, but it still hangs. If I retry getting emails, I get the message "This folder is being processed. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages."

Cheers,

Tony
