I'd like to suggest that Progress Quest be added to the game section of the site. There is absolutely no install at all. Download a zip file, extract the folder, run the program. The save file gets saved in the folder as well, so it can be taken anywhere and run anywhere with no admin rights necessary. When it's deleted, it's gone forever. The site is here: Progress Quest
But I think I might just do a launcher for it.
It creates a couple of registry keys that'll need cleaning up, so it isn't quite natively portable.
Lets see if I can cudgel the PAL into doing this for me....
I honestly can't see it ever going official, given the nature of the base application, but what the heck.
You can find it at https://portableapps.com/node/23763
the explanation on what it is was very vauge. i am not going to go hunting for the info.
that is the way the PQ website approaches it as well, in an attempt, I guess, to encourage people to download and see it in all its splendour for themselves.
Essentially, it is a spoof MMORPG. It allows you to create a character, by making decisions on name, race, class, etc. none of which essentially make any difference whatsoever to gameplay. It then proceeds to pop up a game window with shows your progress, with continually updating textual notifications of what your character is doing.... what quest (s)he is now on, what creature (s)he is killing, what loot (s)he is carrying. When you can't carry anymore, it reports that you head back to town to sell up, all with a constantly moving progress bar at the bottom of the screen.
It is (according to wikipedia) essentially a skit at the "auto-attack" mode in games such as RuneQuest, but it takes the auto functions to the next level, automating all the rest of the game, too.
There is only one keyboard control - ALT-F4 - which is save game and exit
It seems, however, to have something of a cult following online, in the tens of thousands of players (I have no idea why).
It is good for a laugh, and it was a fun project to play with PAL to make portable (I've been meaning to work through making an app properly clean and spec-compliant for a while to try the launcher / installer / etc. out), but, tbh, it isn't going to stay on my flash drive for very long...
I feel like I've been RickRolled.
so it now has my approvial o(^_^)~b
+1
