Try This...

If you had Windows Seven instead of XP, this would have a better chance of being the problem. Still, you may as well try it. Make sure Notepad++ is not running (all the processes have been closed) and then try removing the lightexplorer.dll plugin (remove it from both the ansi and unicode folders, there will be one copy in each one):

more info?

I found the same thing happening on my Asus eee today, and it seemed that this error is specific to the portable version of np++, as it works as expected with the standard np++ installation. Your recommended resolution worked just fine, thank you for that. Can you give any more info on why this is happening?

A little bit...

Hi,

In general terms, yes. Basically, lightexplorer.dll is the main file for a Notepad++ plugin called Light Explorer. Notepad++ plugins are basically extensions to Notepad++ which provide extra functionality, and can be found here:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/notepad-plus/index.php?title=Plugi...

Light Explorer provides a Windows Explorer interface (a file browsing pane) inside Notepad++. See here for an example:
http://elementdesignllc.com/2009/09/notepad-explorer-vs-light-explorer/

When you start Notepad++, it starts all the plugins that you have installed as well. The PortableApps version of Notepad++ includes Light Explorer as a plugin (for both the ANSI and Unicode versions), but significantly, Notepad++ standard does not for the Unicode version. It does for the ANSI version, but if you are running Win XP or later, you will likely be running the Unicode version, not the ANSI version - especially so if you download the installer version of Notepad++ and not the Zip/7z version. So, you run Notepad++ Portable and it tries to start Light Explorer as well. It would seem that Light Explorer prevents some PC's from loading Notepad++ itself - it doesn't seem to affect every PC, but there are some configurations it obviously does (mine included, I have to remove the plugin to get Notepad++ Portable to run). Anyway, when you remove the plugin file (lightexplorer.dll), that removes the plugin from Notepad++ startup, and thus Notepad++ is able to run. It means that you will not have the Light Explorer functionality inside Notepad++ however, but if you weren't going to use it anyway, there is no loss. There are two copies of the file, as the plugin comes in both an ANSI version (that is the one in the Notepad++ Portable folder with 'ansi' on the end of it) and a Unicode version (the one just in the plain Notepad++ Portable folder).

I have just tried the standalone version of Notepad++ on my PC. I tried the Unicode version first, and you are right - it is not affected by the problem. That is because it does not come with Light Explorer. I then tried the ANSI version (which does come with Light Explorer), and it did lock up - until I removed the Light Explorer plugin, whereupon the problem went away. Definitely, Light Explorer is a problem on at least Win 7 64bit. I'm not sure why the Light Explorer plugin is not included with the Unicode version of Notepad++ standalone, but it is possible that this problem is a known problem and that is why.

Notepad++ does not have its own support forum here, so I guess we have to hope that whoever packages Notepad++ Portable notices this thread and can take a look at it. As Notepad++ standalone (Unicode) does not include Light Explorer, it may be worthwhile not including it with the PortableApps version either.
