I did a very dumb thing by upgrading on the app itself. Now the firefox icon
on my Platform still says 3.0.15 BUT when I open FF the copy says 3.6.6.
Everything works but doubt if I should leave things in this mess. Surely I did
not load a full sized copy but that is what it appears even though it is buried
in the portable app.
What is the simplest thing I can do without losing all my data?

Just do an in-place upgrade. Download the current Firefox Portable 3.6.6 and install it right over your existing version. Your data (bookmarks, passwords, extensions, etc) will all be preserved.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
