Bonkenc - Is something wrong here?

Nowhere obvious to post this, so decided to go for General. Downloaded Platform 2.0 beta to take it for a spin and Bonkenc was my first install as it's a great FLAC ripper.

Was using the latest install version (1.0.15) until earlier today, but gave up - the ripping now takes an age, much longer than the previous version (1.0.14). That led to me thinking, "download the PA version instead". I noticed this was released just a few days ago.

Works fine, except for one thing - it keeps flipping over into Arabic! I don't speak Arabic, but managed to locate the language option and set it back to English. Then changed some of the encoder options and blow me, everything is back to Arabic again.

Maybe worth a look? Anyone else had a similar issue?

Platform language

I guess its the platform language. Do you have it set to english?
I have mine set to german and BonkEnc is in german. If I change it to english, BoncEnc change accordingly. Maybe there is something wrong there with your setup?

Hi Simeon, I checked the PA

Hi Simeon,

I checked the PA 2.0 platform language settings and it was definitely English. I changed the language options within Bonkenc Portable a third time and it seems to have stayed set to English. I'll keep an eye on it, but whatever it was it was strange.

I also mentioned in my original post that the new installation version of Bonkenc seemed really slow - like 40 minutes to rip a 15 track audio CD! Previously, Bonkenc would rip these tracks in the space of ten minutes.

Well, I've noticed exactly the same thing happen to Bonkenc Portable - but I think I've also discovered the reason why. This evening I started ripping a few audio CDs with Bonkenc Portable and it was flying. I then ran Xampp for some other stuff I was working on. Bonkenc slowed right down - so far it's taken nearly 40 minutes to rip a 13 track audio CD. Even when Xampp is closed, Bonkenc is left running slowly. I'll reboot my laptop later and try Bonkenc again, just to see if Xampp is the cause of the slow-down.

Bonkenc is the best flac ripper I've used, so now I know that Xampp maybe having an effect on performance I'll just avoid using Xampp when I want to rip audio CDs.

Bug in early BonkEnc release (not PortableApps.com)

There was a bug in the first package of BonkEnc 1.0.15 yesterday that caused very slow ripping speeds.

It was online for only a short time with just a handful of downloads, so I replaced it silently. If you download it again, the problem should no longer occur.

The "switching to Arabic" problem seems to be specific to the PortableApps version. Another user reported the same a few months ago: https://portableapps.com/node/23524

I could not reproduce it yet though.

Thanks Robert

Many thanks for your explanation Robert. I may well have been one of those "handful of downloads". I noticed the speed difference immediately. I'll download the installation version again.

I've just been doing some background reading on Xampp to see if there any 'memory leaks' associated with that application. At first glance, this appears to be the case and I'm wondering if this is what has slowed the portable version of Bonkenc?

Earlier this evening, I was using Bonkenc portable and the ripping was fast. I then ran Xampp and noticed Bonkenc slow down. Now its taking 40 minutes + to rip a 11-track audio CD.

I'll look at the Xampp issue a little more tomorrow and will drop you a line. If this proves to be the case, then its not a Bonkenc issue, but an Xampp one. But may be worth knowing if there are any other comments about Bonkenc running slow.

Great app by the way - I've used nearly all the rippers than can produce FLAC output, but Bonkenc is by far the best.
