U3 portable firefox, unlauchable after auto update , please help!

Portable firefox on my U3 drive has not functioned since it auto-updated while in use.

It has been unable to launch since the update. It generates an error message: " firefox.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows , an error log is being created".

Uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it to the U3 drive did not help. Switching computers does not help. The Marathon browser generated the same error message but after uninstalling/reinstall now works. Thanks!

New Version

Install the new 1.5.0.43 release. If it fails, drop a note back here and I'll walk you through some possible fixes.

U3 portable firefox error after auto update

I downloaded the new 1.5.0.43 release from your link.

It loaded fine on the U3 drive but generated the same error when I tried to launch it.

Thanks,

Uninstall and delete

Sounds like something went a bit wacky on your drive. Did you do an unsafe eject at some point? Since you already did an uninstall and reinstall, you've already wiped out your personal data that was on the device (personally, I wish U3's dialogs were clearer about this). Uninstall FF for U3 and then delete the following directory on your U3 device (X being the drive letter of the data partition, not the CD partition):

X:\System\Apps\3C9F7B3F-D55C-42cd-8537-B878518B73AF\

Once you've done that, reinstall 1.5.0.43. It should work as expected from that point on.

U3 firefox unanble to launch

Yes, I did an unsafe eject after the error messages started comming up. My U3 would not allow me to safely eject. The F drive was still active even after I ejected from the E: drive ( location of U3 CD partition on my USB ).

looking at F:\System\Apps..there is no folder/file 3C9F7B3F-D55C-42cd-8537-B878518B73AF

There are 6 folders inside. F:\System\Apps

236C571E-47D6-4a73-AD5A-97F1E555E375 modified 6/06
786EC753-D82C-493A-BF26-67D74AE2D931 modified 7/22/06

F993B697-730C-4B97-BDCB-47DE67B755A3 modified 7/10/06

7/26/06 has a Maxthon file inside. Which one(s) should I delete. Thanks!

One piece at a time

1. Eject your U3 device
2. Reboot your computer (this is important to fully free any files)
3. Browse to X:\System\Apps and delete the folder 3C9F7B3F-D55C-42cd-8537-B878518B73AF if it exists
4. Reinstall FF for U3 1.5.0.43

That should do it from my end. If that still fails, then something is wrong with either your U3 device or your PC. And I can't assist with those.

Portable FF U3 reinstalled and working

Your four-step plan worked. My favorite browser is working again.
Thanks for all the advice and for the great Portable FF app!

Sure thing

One note: Update is set to ask first in the new release, as it should be. Just be sure that you have at least 40mb free and give it at least 5 minutes (up to 10 if you have a slower drive) to run the update. Flash RAM is much slower than a hard drive, so the FF update process is much slower when run from a flash drive.
