This seemed like the only request for a portable version of BOINC that i could find, so thought i'd give it a bump, as I would also be interested in a portable version of this.

I have been running BOINC since it started and before that SETI@HOME. I have a 250GB External Hard Drive from which I run all my PortableApps (My Portable Office - Next best thing to a Notebook). I travel a lot between clients and often sit hours on end on some workstation doing some work for them. This could be used for BOINC and its projects. I think we should get this ASAP!!!

Idd like to add my vote for Portable BONIC.
a most splendid idea.
im vvote 4 this app
I approve the idea of creating a Portable Boinc if at all possible.
I've just started running it, so I will also look into how practical it would be. If there is a command-line interface in there somewhere still, it should be easy enough to do...
Just been thinking about this, and I don't think you can transfer work units between machines, the machine which downloads the unit must upload it also (and probably do all the work in between?). I suppose for each computer used a new profile folder to store work units etc could be created, and each time portable boinc is started it checks to see which computer it is on? and then resumes work from the appropriate profile/folder?
I've been trying BONIC "as is", and when you transfer the entire folder (mine is about 15MB), the work to be processed is moved to, and another machine can continue on the job.
All you need to do then is on the profile manager, use the general settings to control resource usage, etc., on the "guest" machines, and use the home profile to use different settings on your home machine(s) if you so wish.
Note: I have only done limited testing, and have been running SETI@Home only so far, but it appears to work on several different machines without a drama.

Peter
Hallo there,
actually, I'm using BOINC on serveral machines with different CPU-Power AND with different Project.
SETI@home ist actually not the onliest project for BOINC, climateprediction.net and others, like for medicine-researches, are quite popular.
Nevertheless, these project increace the amount of used diskspace dramatically.
On one machine, my BOINC-Folder (processing an climateprediction.net-project) has a size of 2.18 GB. That is more than unusefull for a prtable media, though there are already capacities greater than 8 GB.
Interessing idea, but only with small projects like SETI@home usable.

Speaking from the BOINC help volunteer snunhuck (myself), it is highly unrecommended that you run BOINC on a portable USB Flash Drive. Some projects such as Climateprediction.net, regularly access the drive. This excessive frequent data accession can cause a USB Flash Drive to die earlier than it should.

even though the last commend disencouraged it, I still give my vote to this, it serves a better purpose than Sudoku portable if you ask me
I'd love a portable BOINC client as well. I've run SETI@Home on a flash drive for a few years (both before and after the BOINC client came out) and it's still going strong. For a project like SETI, even a 256MB flash drive will work... and you can get them for about $20 now. So even if it does fail after a few years... that's hardly a loss. I would like a portable version of BOINC so I can run it on my work PC. We don't have admin privileges so I can't install the client. As portable versions run safely in their own folder without needing access to protected system files, this is a good alternative. This does not bypass the purpose of having users have limited access. The purpose of that is to prevent users from downloading and installing everything they want... which may include viruses or applications which may damage the system or security. Portable apps don't have access to any more system files than the user has access to. My machine is on 24/7 (except for weekends)... it would be nice to have it doing something.
I think that this is a very good idea, if anyone make or find a portable BOINC, please inform me to danielrs12345@gmail.com.
Thank you.

i Too would love to see this happen...
or even a "silent" install version would do me.
You may expect to find a dead USB stick soon after using a portable version of BOINC. I woulg support the idea only if BOINC did not write frequently though.

You would have to return to the computer in which you downloaded it from in order for the verification (onced recieved by our server) to be successful. Think of how mnay computers there would be on the computers in this account page.
Also, your model/task is prone to crashes and leaves everything unstable.

I use Boinc in three PCs at this moment, working with Malariacontrol, Rosetta@home and FightAids (World Community Grid)... if you check the system requirements, you need big space in your hard disk and enough RAM... if you don't have it, maybe you can install and run Boinc, but you are not going to receive new work because the size of the projects (except maybe SETI@home).
Of course you can change the Boinc Settings, but the smaller the space and RAM you give, the fewer the work you receive.
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
