4.0b2 and W2K

Portable 4.0b1 worked fine on W2K, but Portable 4.0b2 just shows the Portable Apps splash screen and never launches - no process in the Task Manager. There's no RtlCaptureContext error message, like with the Minefield nightly's after or on 07-08. If W2K is no longer supported, there should be a notice on the download page; but I hope John is able to come up with a fix for Portable Firefox like he did here - http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/windows_95/ - for Firefox 1.5.x.x.
LOL, wishful thinking on my part.

I think this is the appropriate Bug report about what is broken.

IMO, it is silly that this hasn't been fixed yet, because it breaks Minefield on W2K due to changes made for BreakPad, which hasn't worked in 3.6, and maybe even 3.5 versions. It's one thing to not "support" W2K and WinXP SP1&2, but to break it over a "service" that doesn't even work for those OS's is another.

Doesn't Work on Windows 2000

Neither 4.0 Beta 2 nor the current Beta 3 Pre nightly builds work on Windows 2000. Both experience the RtlCaptureContext error. I added a note to the page.

I believe the last proposal was Windows 2000 isn't officially supported with Firefox 4.0 and later but that they would not break Windows 2000 support unless absolutely necessary. It looks like a simple fix code-wise, so I wager it'll land before Beta 3. It affects nearly 1 million daily users, so they'll keep it while they can.

There is discussion on it here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=579078

Eventually, it looks like they want to build on Visual C++ 10 which drops Windows 2000 support. That switch won't be until after the 4.0 branch, but once that happens, Firefox on Windows 2000 will be done from then on. The 4.0 branch would probably still be build on the current setup... VC10 would happen with maybe 4.1 or whatever major revision happens next it seems.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
