Well, I'm finally doing it. I'm buying a notebook. Anyone have suggestions?
Price range $1500-$2500 USD. Won't be obsolete in 6 months (hopefully longer). I've got my eye on this one:

If you suggest something from dell, then you should throw you're computer into a river.
Seriously though, something comparible in features to the above. If you know of one, with a better price, then speak up. I get my student loan in 3-5 days so not a hurry. Help me out guys!
I got an Averatec and have been pretty happy with it. It's almost a no-name brand, but it's built pretty well and has good performance. I got one of their 2200 Series notebooks.

Thanks I'll check it out. Also. what is you're opinion of it's battery life?

I haven't stress tested it much. But it's close to only 4lbs but has a full set of everything... so it won't be as good as an ultralite with a ULV chip in it (which would be about twice the price and 1/2 as powerful). It gets about 3 hours on normal usage. But, you can dim the screen and still see it well. And it has a "Slow" mode that locks the processor at 700MHz to save battery life, too. There's even a dedicated button for it.

Thanks, I looked at the site. I'm looking for something of a desktop replacement that I can still take with me. That's why I linked to the Toshiba. It's better than my Desktop! ('Cept the vid card). If I meet this goal, I'll sell the desktop and that would help to offset the cost.
As it is, my best friend needs a new pc and he'd pay $800 for it, which is good since that's what I paid, minus monitor and keyboard/mouse. I've put an extra $500 into it in the vidcard ($350), ram($75), and a new DVD Burner($125).

I'd say wait until the Core 2 Duo processors come to laptops. I'd also wait a bit for Vista to make its appearance in both notebook and desktop computers. You'll need at least 2 Gigs of memory and that's not very common in laptops yet, so it might be best just to wait two or three months.

Vista? Igh. As much as I like Windows, I refuse to support DRM. Vista may not have any DRM stuff directly built in, but the underpinnings are there. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I'm staying far, far away.
Oh, and you only need 2 GB or higher to run Vista optimally right now because it's still in beta. I imagine the final version will be better optimized and run quite well with a single gig of RAM.

maggie Hey, I resent that remark! I only weigh ONE Godzillaton!

Well, even after Vista, I'll probably stick with XP for a while until I have to switch, or I'll dual-boot (actually tri-boot, with linux,XP,Vista, like I do now). The laptop at my circuit city link has 2 gigs DDR2RAM, and although it says core duo, I know it's just a rebranded PentiumD mobile. And I would like to wait for the real Core Duo line to hit, but I was kinda hoping to get it in time for school to start, and they'll probably be a tad more expensive.
I've been looking at tablets, too, but I find them kind of clunky, and short on horsepower.
And Bruce, I'm on the same page as you on DRM.
And Vista runs great for me with 1.5GB Ram, although startup is a little slow. But the Performance Center is telling me that it's my hi-def audio drivers.

Core 2 Duo is available in laptops now. I am planning to buy one this week. Probably a HP with 1G memory, 120G HD, DVD-+RW , 15 inch display, MS Media Center operating system. Sale price after rebates at $850. It's a little slower than my current desktop, but I won't be using it as my main machine.
Dual core doesn't do a lot for existing programs, but will help if you are running multiple applications. Like compiling and responding to Forums. I plan on avoiding Vista for a couple of years. Will introduce a whole new set of problems and require way too much memory.

The current Core Duos are rebranded Pentium D's. It's intel trying to change their image. Actual Core Solo and Duo processors are still in testing, or whatever you call hardware beta testing.

but it still is a huge performance boost from my Dell 366 Mhz for not a lot of outlay.

You got a point there.
