Social Networking Sites

Tired of facebook, don't want to be a tweeter, what is good alternative to facebook, somethign like it, social networking site...

Open source, free, no ads?
There is a project in development, though I dislike the name: diaspora

at any rate, I am weaning myself from facebook, need something different, ala Google groups, yahoo groups, i dislike both of those, though effective...

any suggestions?

(del.ic.ous. is an example of a site I dislike, the name itself is rediculous, "digg" also, stupid... too bad, maybe they all suck, leading to the conclusion that Social Networking is for the birds, to use a PC phrase)

Identi.ca?

Identi.ca is pretty much the only widespread opensource social network, so you'll want to check that out.

Diaspora FTW!

Diaspora is FLOSS and will be usable in a few weeks.

Google me

is coming out soon.

Apparently, everyone with a Google account automatically becomes a member.

That said, there's gonna be 400 million members when it comes out.

Compare that to Facebook's 500 million and we've got a horse race.

Google is Your Brother

When you click on someone's profile link will it show you real-time, hi-res satellite images of their house, so you can see what they're up to? Smile

I remember reading somewhere

that the founder of Facebook said something like "the age of privacy is over" or something.

I think its true. Anything you do, everything to do, someone knows. The only thing that nobody knows about are your thoughts (although soon that may change)

But when the End is here, I guess the only real person that it should matter to you about what has been seen is Him.

And I don't think that the information that Google gathers will be used for bad stuff. I mean, they are Google. They're like the 4th most important computer/internet/software related business out there (behind MS and Apple, but Macs suck anyway, so they might as well be second)

indeed he did. Bastard. The age of privacy should not be over. Just because you want to plaster pictures of yourself derping online doesn't mean that you have permission to post my derps.

My brother said he was "forced" to get one because of how many pictures of him were going up on the internet. Bologna. Its should be illegal for that kind of stuff, but it exists.

Course, I'm just a halfway to a country boy, looking at it from the outside, wondering when I lost my rights . . . that I never signed off for.

Google sold out

long time ago

heard they are #1 in market cap (italization) meaning money, surpassing microsoft (and apple, et. al.)

my worry is not about big brother or being un-privacied, it is that these stupid sites just suck your brain into non-reality and irrelevance

I feel sorry for 'tweeters' and so on, it is a bad way to live, with half your brain tied behind your back, or into this black hole of mindlessness

I think the answer is a site like this one where we smarties can share amongst ourselves

keep it up

Social Networking

social phenomenon like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter serve a pyscho-social purpose and stop people offing themselves when they realize the insignificance of their existence. The world is getting smaller and as it does so our significance in it gets smaller too.

It's interesting to note the social despair that came about during the early twentieth century as the industrial revolution gained pace. Now we have the digital revolution or electronic age and once again people are feeling lost and afraid. Afraid that things are changing too fast and their place in the universe will no longer be required. Social networking gives people a warm, fuzzy feeling like somebody else actually gives a #%@^ about them. It serves its purpose.

There will always be an

There will always be an opiate for the masses. Whether tech, religion, social networks. Someone will use something as an opiate.

hey, I tweet But my tweets

hey, I tweet Biggrin But my tweets are protected, and I know exactly who is following my tweets. I'm also fairly careful about what content I post their.

And remember, stuff like this isn't private either. I learned some interesting things about a person who ticked me off with a google search. He had no facebook, but there were various posts he had made on google groups.

I just realized that I said 4th

when I meant third (or second). Blum

The age of privacy should not be over.

Are you saying that it is? Or are you implying that it is not? I was also "forced" to get one because I wanted to get closer to somebody I may/may not have/still do/but now has a boyfriend, like (I made an account in May). It wasn't long before I noticed there were like a crapload of photos of me I didn't know existed.

I don't know how good or bad losing privacy can be, but I'm sure it won't be long until we all find out.

Ridiculous, isn't it? Should have to make an account to trash those . . .

There you go!

Besides too many people treat social networking as if it was their body and soul. Bad things can only happen as a result of that, things that would not want bring up here and stuff that is just purely hilarious!

Have fun!

I'm tired of people living in their fantasy world when the clock is ticking away, and when they are unable to see reality for what it is.

block all posts

so you don't have to keep up with whatever people 'update' but can still be connected to them via facebook

twitter i don't know about, but i suppose you have to unfollow them to block their posts (?)
